Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Hagerstown Railroad Museum for its authentic Western Maryland Railway artifacts and the chance to climb aboard Engine 202 and explore cabooses, making it a hit with families. However, inconsistent operating hours have led to disappointment for some, highlighting the need to verify times before visiting. Reddit

"Despite hours stating open until 4pm they were not. We drove a bit out of our way on an 11hr drive across 4 states with a train obsessed little, to say he was disappointed. So heads up. One gate was still open to see on the grounds but no building access to the 'museum'. The other gate, facing the parking lot had locks. An amazing park is a block away so we went there instead."

"Nice small museum. Enjoyed being able to actually climb onto the engine and the tour of the caboose. The staff are very knowledgeable."

Sandi Stoker

"Neat little museum for anyone who is interested in the WMRR in Hagerstown with lots of history. Hagerstown has a rich history with the railroad and like most RR towns was built upon it.

As a Western Maryland railroad fan my only peeve is that we don't have a WMRR Museum in Maryland centralized, oh well. 🤣

This museum does have an authentic WM Baldwin diesel locomotive and a couple of original WM pieces of rolling stock.

If you're interested in the nearby park is WM steam locomotive #202 not connected with the museum. This is only one of two known steam locomotives from the WM to survive. Unfortunately the park has limited hours of operation, so plan accordingly.

One big plus is this museum is located right next to the old WM yard in Hagerstown. So depending on the rail traffic flow you can get to see some movements in and through the yard on any given day.

Both CSX and Norfolk Southern have many trains moving through Hagerstown at low and high volume times.

Please remember that the Museum is next to an active railroad, do not trespass on RR property for any reason and be respectful for safety reasons."
