Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Gros Morne National Park for its breathtaking, unique landscapes, comparing its fjords to Norway and its geology to another planet. The Western Brook Pond boat tour and Tablelands hike are standout experiences, with well-maintained facilities and helpful park staff contributing to a memorable visit. Some wish they had allocated more time to fully explore its diverse offerings.

"Absolutely stunning national park! So many highlights, we wish we had allocated more than 48 hours! My husband loved his hike up Gros Morne Mountain. The boat tour on Western Brook Pond was amazing, as was the hike in Tablelands and visit to the Discovery center. Park rangers were helpful in all places. 100% must see."

Alyssa Becker

"I visited three times while I lived in Newfoundland and loved it every time. It’s such a nice park whether one goes camping or stays in a hotel in Rocky Harbour. Western Brook Pond is truly amazing. It’s a ~700 km drive from St John’s and not too far from L’Anse aux Meadows. It’s such a wonderful place. I stayed at the Lomond site when camping."

Kirk Holz

"I could spend only half a day. But I really needed much more.
Comparing landscapes in AB, there are different ways you can go through the mountain and enjoy something! Camping, swimming, hiking, biking and maybe fishing @ some points, are the different things you can do in different zones. Even just driving is still great! There were some spots right beside the lakes with beautiful coast to stop by and get wet!
Regarding wildlife, you may see caribou, porcupine, raccoon, coyote which can be a unique experience.
Strongly recommended!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Exploring the Fjords: Western Brook Pond

The Western Brook Pond is arguably Gros Morne's most iconic attraction. This stunning freshwater fjord, carved by glaciers, is accessible via a scenic boat tour. The sheer cliffs, some rising hundreds of meters, are draped with cascading waterfalls, creating a truly awe-inspiring spectacle. Instagram The boat tour itself is a leisurely experience, allowing ample time to soak in the dramatic scenery and learn about the area's geology and ecology from the guides. Many visitors compare the experience to being in the fjords of Norway. Instagram+1

Planning your visit to Western Brook Pond requires booking tickets well in advance, especially during the summer months, as tours are very popular and can sell out. The journey to the boat launch involves a pleasant walk through boreal forest, adding to the overall experience. Remember to dress in layers, as the weather can be unpredictable, and bring your camera to capture the breathtaking views. Instagram+1

Tips for the tour: Arrive at the departure point early to ensure good seating. While the tour is generally calm, some visitors mention that it can be a bit chilly on the water, even in summer. The tour duration is typically a few hours, providing a comprehensive exploration of the pond's grandeur. Instagram

Geological Wonders: The Tablelands

The Tablelands offer a unique geological experience, showcasing a section of the Earth's mantle exposed above ground due to tectonic plate movement. This otherworldly landscape is characterized by its reddish-brown, barren terrain, a stark contrast to the surrounding lush greenery. Instagram Hiking here feels like stepping onto another planet, with fascinating rock formations and a sense of ancient geological forces at play. It's a relatively easy hike, making it accessible for most visitors. Reddit

What to expect: The Tablelands Trail is a well-maintained path that winds through this unique environment. While it's a geological marvel, it's important to note that it's a sensitive ecosystem. Visitors are asked to stay on marked trails to protect the fragile vegetation and rock formations. Reddit The lack of trees and the exposed nature of the landscape mean you'll have panoramic views of the surrounding park. Reddit

Photography and preparation: The stark beauty of the Tablelands makes it a photographer's dream, especially during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset. However, the area can be exposed to the elements, so bring sun protection, water, and sturdy footwear. Reddit While dog-friendly in general, there are restrictions for pets on the Tablelands itself to protect the ecosystem. Reddit

Exploring Gros Morne's Communities

Gros Morne National Park is not just about its natural landscapes; it's also home to several charming coastal communities, each with its own unique character and history. Rocky Harbour is a central hub, offering accommodation, dining, and access to key attractions like the Western Brook Pond tour. Instagram Woody Point provides a picturesque setting with colorful houses and a more laid-back atmosphere, while Norris Point offers stunning views and is a gateway to exploring Bonne Bay. Reddit

These communities are integral to the Gros Morne experience, offering a glimpse into the local way of life. You can find local crafts, fresh seafood restaurants, and friendly faces eager to share stories about the region. Instagram Exploring these villages allows you to appreciate the human element of the park and understand how people have lived in harmony with this dramatic environment for generations. Reddit

Tips for visiting communities: Take time to wander through the streets, visit local shops, and perhaps enjoy a meal at a waterfront restaurant. Many of these communities have small museums or interpretive centers that delve into their maritime heritage and the park's history. Reddit
