"Very well preserved, vertical wood structure, French colonial home. The original portion of the home getting close to 250 years old. Hard to find buildings that old in Missouri. Go over to the Centre for French Colonial Life to see some of the artifacts from the period.

Tour of this house and the somewhat newer one next door are $10 a person. My wife and I essentially got a private tour and our tour guide was fantastic. Very knowledgeable and had a knack for keeping the tour interesting. Took about 30 minutes."

The Architectural Marvel: Vertical Log Construction

The Louis Bolduc House is a prime example of the poteaux en terre (posts in the ground) building technique, a hallmark of early French colonial architecture in North America. This method involves setting sturdy wooden posts vertically into the earth, which then form the primary structure of the walls. These logs are often chinked with mud, moss, or other natural materials to seal gaps and provide insulation. This construction style is remarkably rare today, making the Bolduc House a significant historical artifact. Reddit

This technique was well-suited to the available resources and climate of the region. The vertical logs provided a strong framework, and the earth foundation helped anchor the structure. The house's original portion dates back nearly 250 years, showcasing the durability and ingenuity of these early builders. Visiting the house offers a tangible connection to this unique architectural heritage, allowing you to appreciate the craftsmanship firsthand. Reddit

Understanding this construction method is key to appreciating the house's historical value. It’s a stark contrast to later timber framing or brick construction and speaks volumes about the resourcefulness of the French settlers in Ste. Genevieve. The guides often highlight these details, making the tour particularly insightful for those interested in historical architecture. Reddit

Founded in the mid-18th century, the town retains a strong connection to its French roots, evident in its architecture, street names, and historical narratives. The Louis Bolduc House is a tangible link to this foundational period, offering a glimpse into the lives of the original inhabitants. Reddit

The tours often touch upon the broader context of French influence in the region, including stories like the Battle of Ft San Carlos, which highlights the strategic importance and historical events that shaped Ste. Genevieve. Visitors often express surprise at the extent of this French presence, which is less commonly emphasized in mainstream American history education. Exploring sites like the Bolduc House and the Centre for French Colonial Life provides a more complete picture of the diverse cultural tapestry of early America. Reddit

Immersing yourself in this history is a primary draw for visitors. The knowledgeable staff and preserved structures allow for a deep dive into a unique chapter of American settlement. It’s an opportunity to learn about a different facet of colonial life beyond the more familiar British influences. Reddit
