Reviews Summary

Visitors find Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park to be an interesting and informative stop, particularly appreciating the knowledgeable staff and the unique historical context of the town. While some note ongoing renovations and wish for more specific souvenirs, the park offers a valuable glimpse into French colonial history. Reddit+2

"Interesting place. Inside you can see pieces of the original home and there are rocks (gems?) to look at from the area. Lots of historical information. Kind of like a mini museum. Only thing, I wish they had souvenirs from Ste Genevieve instead of Missouri only."

Marybeth Oneal

"It was a cute town filled with old houses. I would definitely recommend going spring through fall. I went on a winter Sunday and everything was closed and the town seemed dead. The ladies in the visitor's center are friendly. I think a lot of things are still getting renovated in this park. It might be much nicer once everything is completed. Not my favorite National Historic Park, but if you are in the area, it's worth stopping by."

Gracie Gralike

"I stopped by during the week and there was no one there but my mom and I
.The ladies there very knowledgeable about the town and it's history. They were able to suggest a book about my 6th great grandfather, Charles La Vallee."

The Unique Architecture of Ste. Genevieve

Ste. Genevieve boasts a remarkable collection of French colonial architecture, a rarity in the United States. Many of the historic homes feature a distinctive poteaux-en-terre construction, where vertical wooden posts are set directly into the earth, often with a stone or brick foundation. This building technique, along with features like steep gabled roofs and dormer windows, reflects the early French settlers' heritage and adaptation to the local climate. Exploring these structures offers a tangible connection to the town's foundational period. Reddit

Wandering through the streets, you'll notice the unique layout and the preservation efforts that have maintained the town's historical character. The Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park plays a crucial role in interpreting and protecting this architectural legacy. Understanding these building styles enhances the appreciation of the town's historical significance and its status as a living museum. Reddit

Some of the most iconic examples include the Felix Vallé House State Historic Site and the Louis Bolduc House Museum, though access and interpretation are managed by different entities. The park's Visitor Center provides context for these and other historic structures, making it an ideal starting point for architectural enthusiasts. Reddit

Understanding the Park's Development

Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park is a relatively new addition to the National Park System, established in 2009. Its creation reflects a growing recognition of the town's unique historical importance, particularly its role as one of the oldest European settlements west of the Mississippi River. The park's mission is to preserve and interpret the history and culture of this early French colonial community. Reddit

The park is still in a phase of development, with ongoing efforts to acquire and preserve additional historic structures and to expand its interpretive programs. This means that while some areas are fully established, others are still being developed, which can affect the visitor experience. Reviews often mention that the park might be 'much nicer once everything is completed.' Reddit
