Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Beauvais-Amoureux House for its significant French colonial history and rare vertical log construction, highlighting the knowledgeable park rangers and the well-maintained site. The detailed diorama of 1836 Ste. Genevieve is also a popular feature. However, some note that it lacks interactive elements for children or a gift shop, making it best suited for history enthusiasts.

"Such a fabulous place to visit and learn about our French colonial history and how tolerant and open minded the local Ste Genevieve people were for their time. Such diversity and tolerance compared to almost any place us in America."

Joe Steiger (Tiger)

"The history down in Ste Gen is so amazing. Allegedly going back to 1735. Hard to find that kind of history this side of the Mississippi. This house is actually one of the few vertical log style houses left in the US. I believe there are only 5 and 3 are in the Ste Gen area.

The tour is very quaint and community driven, which is awesome to see the local community take such pride in their history. The house itself is very nicely kept and has multiple displays. The best one being a scale model of Ste Gen during the post colonial era.

The tour does cost a few bucks, but if you go to the local tourism office in downtown Ste Gen you can get a passport for $15 a person and see six different sites around town. It's good for the calendar year and will save you a little cash if you visit most the places."

Matt Alvino

"The park ranger was very knowledgeable about the history of the house and town. The parks department has done a fantastic job on upkeep."

The Unique Poteaux en Terre Construction

The Beauvais-Amoureux House stands as a testament to a unique and historically significant building technique: poteaux en terre, or vertical logs set directly into the earth. This method was widely employed by French colonists in North America due to its relative simplicity and the availability of timber. The logs are placed vertically side-by-side, often chinked with mud, moss, or other natural materials to seal the gaps. This construction style is crucial for understanding early colonial architecture and adaptation to local resources. Reddit

This architectural style is exceptionally rare today. The Beauvais-Amoureux House is one of only five such structures known to exist in the United States, with three of them concentrated in the Ste. Genevieve area. Its preservation offers a tangible link to the past, allowing visitors to appreciate the ingenuity and craftsmanship of early settlers. The house's well-maintained condition, thanks to the National Park Service, ensures this piece of history remains accessible for generations to come. Reddit
