There are actually three waterfalls fairly close together in this part of the Ouachita National Forest. This one is Little Missouri Falls and it’s my favorite. It runs all year long but it’s especially grand in the spring for more water and in the fall for the colors. It’s also a great spot to cool off in the summer. There’s a parking lot with picnic areas and a pit toilet. It’s a quarter mile eas...

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the abundant natural beauty, with countless creeks and scenic views perfect for relaxation and exploration. The peaceful environment and opportunities for activities like hiking and crystal digging are highly praised. However, the intense summer heat and humidity can be a significant drawback for some, and navigating the forest's gated roads requires careful planning.

"Beautiful Place, lots of scenic views. You can find a beautiful creek almost anywheres you turn. Even some just perfect to let the kids play without having to worry about too deep of water. Photos of creek were just steps away from our primitive camp spot!"

Lisa Vincent

"If the heat and humidity wasn't terrible in this area I'd give it 4 stars. Decent views, lots of Forest. Not much to do besides trails, views, and fishing. There are some 4x4 trials that are probably pretty cool. I wouldn't come here for any vacation without an air conditioning system set up rather in your tent or camper. You'd melt !"

Tyler Shinn

"Ouachita National Forest is such a beautiful and refreshing place to visit! The natural scenery, fresh air, and peaceful environment make it perfect for relaxing and enjoying nature. A great spot for hiking, exploring, or just spending quiet time away from the city. Truly a natural gem!"

Exploring Ouachita's Waterfalls

Ouachita National Forest is home to some stunning waterfalls, with Little Missouri Falls being a prime example. This impressive cascade is a must-see, particularly in the spring when water flow is at its peak, or in the fall when the surrounding foliage adds a splash of color. The falls are relatively accessible, with a parking area nearby, making it a great spot for a picnic or a refreshing dip on a warm day. TikTok

Beyond the well-known Little Missouri Falls, the forest is dotted with numerous smaller creeks and cascades. Many primitive campsites are situated near these water features, offering a serene soundtrack to your outdoor experience. Exploring these less-trafficked areas can lead to discovering your own hidden gems, perfect for quiet contemplation or a cooling break. Remember to always check water levels and conditions before planning your visit. Reddit

When visiting waterfalls, wear appropriate footwear as the terrain can be slippery and uneven. A waterproof camera or protective casing is also advisable to capture the beauty of these natural wonders without damaging your equipment. The sound and sight of flowing water are central to the Ouachita experience, so make time to seek them out. TikTok

The Thrill of Crystal Mining

The area around Mount Ida, within Ouachita National Forest, is renowned as the 'Crystal Capital of the World.' This makes crystal mining a unique and exciting activity for visitors. Several public digging areas and private mines allow you to try your hand at unearthing your own quartz crystals. It's a hands-on experience that connects you directly with the geology of the region. TikTok

To make the most of your crystal digging adventure, come prepared with tools like shovels, buckets, and possibly a sieve. Wear sturdy clothing that you don't mind getting dirty, as well as comfortable, closed-toe shoes. Many visitors find the process of digging and discovering to be incredibly rewarding, and the crystals you find make for fantastic souvenirs. TikTok

Remember to follow any specific rules or guidelines set by the mining sites you visit. Always practice Leave No Trace principles, ensuring you pack out everything you bring in, including any excavated soil or debris. The pursuit of these natural treasures adds a distinct and memorable dimension to a trip to Ouachita National Forest. TikTok

Navigating Ouachita's Roads and Gates

A significant aspect of exploring Ouachita National Forest involves navigating its extensive network of forest service roads. While these roads offer access to remote camping spots and trailheads, they can also present challenges. Many of these roads are gated, and these gates can be closed without much notice. This means that a road you used to enter might be blocked on your way out. Reddit

It is absolutely essential to carry a detailed physical map of the Ouachita National Forest. Cell service is unreliable in many areas, making GPS navigation a risky sole reliance. Familiarize yourself with the road system before you go, and be prepared for the possibility of having to open and re-close gates. Travelers have reported wasting significant time searching for alternative open gates, only to find they had to backtrack and open one themselves. Reddit

When encountering a closed gate, assess the situation. If it's a designated exit gate, you may need to open it to leave, then close it behind you. Always ensure you leave gates as you found them if they are part of a managed area. This preparedness will significantly enhance your experience and prevent unnecessary frustration during your visit to this beautiful, rugged landscape. Reddit
