Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park as a 'hidden gem' offering a profound and often overlooked chapter of California's history. Many appreciate the self-guided tours and the opportunity to learn about the first African American-founded town. Some note challenges with campground navigation and occasional visitor center closures, but the historical significance and peaceful atmosphere are consistently highlighted.

"This historic site offered a convenient self-guided tour. The Visitor Center was closed, and no staff were visible. We appreciated the ability to stay in our cars and listen to the tour, which was perfect for our family to avoid walking in the heat. It is definitely worth the stop to learn more about the history of this place."

"It’s rare to find historic places that have such meaning and true importance. I was born less than 100 miles away and have never heard of this place and the important history it holds. Completely worth the small side venture and time to visit.

And when you visit take the time to watch the video about Col Allensworth in the visitors center. Great info that contributes to the understanding of the only California town funded and founded by African Americans.

I hope everyone takes the time to visit.
And….incident even mention the camp ground!"

Michael Ferguson

"A Hidden Gem in the Middle of Nowhere — in the Best Possible Way!

Colonel Allensworth State Park is such a delightful surprise tucked far off the interstate. It’s quiet, historic, and beautifully preserved — the kind of place where stepping inside the old buildings feels like stepping into another era. The volunteers who give the tours are knowledgeable and kind, and the whole site radiates California history.

Finding the campground, however… well, that’s where the adventure really begins! It would have been very helpful if CalTrans had mentioned the railroad crossing construction, because navigating around it made locating the campground nearly impossible. And honestly, even once you get inside the park, the signs to the campground are a bit of a scavenger hunt.

But once you arrive? Peaceful, wide-open spaces, starry skies, and a truly unique state park experience. Absolutely worth the journey — just bring your best sense of direction (and maybe a little patience!)."
