Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Kern National Wildlife Refuge as a peaceful oasis teeming with diverse birdlife, especially during winter migrations. The auto tour is a highlight, offering easy wildlife viewing. Some trails can be overgrown, and mosquitoes can be present, so preparation is key for an enjoyable experience.

"The visitor center was closed due to the government shutdown, but the gates were open so we could do the auto tour. We only did Route 1 which has the wetlands. This is where you'll see ducks, a lot of coots, many ibis and egrets. The short hiking trails near the parking lot for Route 2 were overgrown, so we gave up after a couple hundred meters. My pants were covered in seeds.
We were surprised by the great number of mosquitoes in the middle of the day on a sunny day in October. Bring repellent."

"This bird sanctuary is so beautiful, like an oasis in between two major highways. Once you go in there, it is like you are the only person on earth! So peaceful, and so many beautiful birds everywhere. Spotted 2 of these gorgeous owls, and one stayed while it's picture was being taken. Even mother geese with babies swimming. So thankful to have found it. If you want to enjoy this beauty & peace, I highly recommend!"

Julie

"Beautiful place in the springtime. We had the pleasure of meeting a ranger who told us all about the preserve and the wildlife in the region. Well worth the trip off I-5"
