This is called the Dragonfly Trail which is located at Jewel of the Creek Preserve! You park at Jewel at the Creek and the trailhead is there but there is overflow parking if you keep driving if that is full. The creek was dried up when we went in mid December but it was still beautiful! Can’t wait to go back in the spring! 🌸 Make sure to be kind to the trail and keep it clean! #arizonahikes #...

Before you even step onto the Cave Creek Trail, you walk through a piece of living art. The Cheaha Trailhead Arch was built by local artists and school kids — they pressed native flowers and leaves into 36 hand-fired clay tiles, added wrought-iron pine cones and branches, and set it all into stone benches and pathways. It’s not just a sign, it’s a community-made gateway into the Cheaha Wilderness....

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Maricopa Trail's scenic beauty, especially the flowing creek in cooler months and the diverse hiking options. The unique landmarks and the opportunity for horseback riding are also highly appreciated. Some note that the creek doesn't flow as much as it used to, and certain trails can be rocky or overgrown.

"Love coming here. In January and February it's nice weather and the creek is flowing. It doesn't flow as much as it used to, but the hike is still nice. It's not strenuous, but if you want that, there's a trail called the elephant trail which goes into the mountains a little. This is more laid back for little kids and crosses the creek a couple times."

"I have been looking at a new spot closer to the valley to camp and hike. I found it. It was an easy drive to this point. I only hiked on this trip and it was rocky and narrow. Not bad though. A nice stream was running in late February. I can't wait to try camping. Will have more to say then."

"The Cave Creek Trailhead is 30 minutes East of Carefree, AZ. Just stay on Cave Creek Rd as it turns North. The road to the trailhead has many switchbacks and turns from pavement, to gravel, to a short stretch of pavement, then gravel again with 2 low water crossings and several cattle guards. There's a big parking lot, port-a-john and choral for horses. We passed a campground and a ranch nearby.
The trail follows the Creek, and at one point, you have to cross it. A couple of cowboys on horses helped us find the crossing as they had just drove a herd of cattle through. The trail is relatively easy to follow. We did an out and back due to threatening weather."
