Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about Easby Abbey's impressive and extensive ruins, often describing it as a surprisingly large and historically rich site. The peaceful atmosphere and scenic walks from Richmond are frequently highlighted as major positives, making it a highly recommended free attraction for history buffs and nature lovers alike. Some mention limited parking as a minor inconvenience.

"Easby Abbey is such a great place to explore. There is only a small car park, so we usually walk from Richmond which is a lovely short stroll and it means we can leave the spaces for those who really need to park close by. The walk in is peaceful and adds to the experience, especially with the views along the way.

The abbey itself is fascinating and much larger than you expect when you first see it. The ruins are really impressive, full of history and character, and there is plenty of space to wander around and take it all in. It is one of those places that feels calm and interesting at the same time, perfect for a gentle explore on a nice day.

We would definitely recommend a visit here if you enjoy history and peaceful spots with a bit of magic about them."

"Lovely walk in Richmond called the horse shoe walk.
Starts at the old railway station now a cinema with cafes, micro brewery and a few shops worth a visit it it's own, plenty of parking.
The walk is easy going, you cross the river and arrive at Easby Abbey, free to walk around there's a lovely cafe over looking the river, a few benches where you can sit and enjoy the views.
The walk from the Abbey is a little more rugged and brings you to the main bridge going in to Richmond. Takes around an hour and a half."

"We came across Easby Abbey by accident during a walk that started on the dis-used railway path from the old Richmond Railway station. After crossing the bridge over the river the path heads to the left and back towards the station, and that’s when we found Easby Abbey.

It’s a large site with extensive remains you can walk around and explore. A quiet and calming place."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History of Easby Abbey

Easby Abbey was founded in 1152 by Roald, Constable of Richmond Castle, as a Premonstratensian monastery. The 'white canons' followed a strict monastic rule, and the abbey became a significant religious and economic centre in the region. Its strategic location near the River Swale provided water and fertile land for agriculture. Instagram+1

The abbey flourished for centuries until the Dissolution of the Monasteries under King Henry VIII. Suppressed in 1536, its buildings were largely stripped of valuable materials and demolished within two years. What remains today are extensive and impressive ruins that offer a glimpse into the abbey's former grandeur and the lives of its inhabitants. Reddit

Despite its destruction, the scale of the remaining structures, including parts of the church, cloister, and dormitory, still conveys the immense size and importance of the original abbey. It stands as a testament to medieval architecture and monastic life in North Yorkshire. Reddit

Exploring the Easby Abbey Loop Walks

The walks around Easby Abbey are a major draw for visitors, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty and historical exploration. The most popular is the 'Little Drummer Boy' walk, a roughly 3-mile circular route starting from Richmond. This path meanders along the River Swale, providing picturesque views before reaching the abbey. Instagram+1

Another recommended route is the 'Horseshoe Walk,' which also starts in Richmond and takes about two hours to complete. This walk often incorporates views of Richmond Castle and the River Swale, leading to Easby Abbey and then back towards Richmond. The terrain can vary, with some sections being more rugged than others. InstagramReddit

These walks are generally considered easy to moderate, making them accessible for most visitors. They are also dog-friendly, allowing you to bring your canine companions along for the adventure. The opportunity to combine a refreshing walk with the exploration of historical ruins makes these routes highly appealing. InstagramReddit

Easby Abbey vs. Other Abbeys

When compared to other famous abbey ruins in the UK, Easby Abbey holds its own with its impressive scale and preservation. While Whitby Abbey is perhaps more dramatically situated on a clifftop, Easby Abbey offers a more extensive and intact ground plan for exploration. Reddit

The Premonstratensian order, known as 'white canons,' gives Easby a unique historical context compared to abbeys founded by Benedictine or Cistercian monks. The sheer size of the ruins allows visitors to truly appreciate the architectural ambition and the daily life within such a large monastic community. Reddit

Many visitors find Easby Abbey to be a surprisingly significant and captivating site, often exceeding expectations. Its free entry and the pleasant walking routes surrounding it make it a highly recommended destination for history enthusiasts and casual explorers alike. Reddit+1
