What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find Castell Morgraig Ruins to be a challenging but potentially rewarding historical site. While the overgrowth and difficult access are frequently mentioned drawbacks, those who persevere can discover intriguing remnants of stonework and enjoy a sense of adventurous exploration.
"Summer visit...there doesn't appear to be any access from the pub car park as stated and you have to climb over a flattened fence to get to a very overgrown path(nettles and brambles). Another gate is locked and says private property.
We managed to find a small piece of stonework which I guess was part of the ruined castle, but it was impossible to get closer to it or around it. We had to retrace our steps which was disappointing as we wanted to do this part of the Ridgeway walk.
If it's not cleared soon it will be lost completely."

"Completely overgrown. Quite cool what you can see, but only if you climb up it. Climb over fence in car park of pub."

"Thistles and blackberry bushes with some rocks. Barely counts as a ruin."

Understanding Castell Morgraig's Past
Despite its historical significance, the castle is now largely in ruins and can be challenging to access. Much of its original structure has succumbed to time and the elements, leaving behind scattered stonework that hints at its former presence. The site's current state of overgrowth means that exploring it requires a sense of adventure and preparedness for rough terrain.
For those who manage to reach the ruins, the experience is often described as a discovery of hidden history. The wild, untamed nature of the site adds to its mystique, offering a glimpse into a less-manicured aspect of Welsh heritage. It's a place for those who appreciate the raw beauty of historical remnants and don't mind a bit of a challenge to find them.
Navigating the Terrain
It's crucial to wear appropriate footwear, such as sturdy hiking boots, to navigate the uneven and potentially slippery ground. Long trousers are also highly recommended to protect against thorns and stinging nettles. The experience is less about a manicured historical walk and more about an adventurous exploration of a wild landscape where history lies hidden.
Given the access difficulties, it's advisable to visit during dry weather and when there's ample daylight. Checking local conditions or seeking advice from those who have recently visited might provide the most up-to-date information on the best way to approach the ruins.
