What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Balmoral Island is a picturesque tropical escape, lauded for its beautiful beaches and clear waters, offering a convenient day trip for cruise passengers. Visitors rave about swimming with local marine life and the unique stingray encounter. However, some find the dolphin experience ethically questionable and note that food and activities can be pricey.
"We visited Balmoral Island off of Nassau in the Bahamas on our vacation. It was absolutely beautiful there, a true tropical paradise.
I will say thought that we opted for the dolphin encounter, which was a little cheesy and the time you spend with them is really not worth the money.
The real beauty of the island are the views and swimming with the local marine life. it was really neat, the schools of little angle fish. They were so curious about us swimming in their waters and we would swim with them. We chased the fish, and then would then follow us in return. There was just something magical about that.
There is also this little restaurant that serves Starbucks Coffee and has a really delicious cheeseburger. It's a little expensive, but in the middle of nowhere without cows, it was a welcomed treat after being on a cruise liner for a couple of days. The burger is both large in portion size and fantastic in taste, the fries were excellent too.
I really want to visit again soon, a beautiful escape."

"Must do! We enjoyed the northwest side swimming and views. Waves crashing In the distance, great clear water!. BRING WATER SHOES! It is a rock/sand borrow. Bar and restaurant are nice! Be careful boarding if choppy."

"I went there yesterday for my second visit. This time we rented a private cabana. It was beautiful. The cabanas are by the pool, overlooking the beach. They have paddleboards for free, a nice sandy beach, a rope hammock, in the water. We took some beautiful pictures. Our cabana attendant Cheryl/Sheryl was delightful and knowledgeable about everything on the island. She brought our drinks and food timely. We did not do the Dolphin experience...either visit. Here is why. Although it looks like they have trained wild dolphins to swim up and interact with tourists for treats, this is incorrect. They actually keep the dolphins in cages under the pier. I don't feel this is is humaine. Not sure where the rays are kept. This is why I took away 1 star for this otherwise awesome experience."

Balmoral Island: A Cruise Excursion Gem
While the island offers a picturesque setting, it's important to manage expectations. Some reviews suggest that the 'private island' feel is shared with other resorts, and the dolphin encounter, while popular, has raised ethical concerns among visitors regarding animal welfare. Despite these points, the natural beauty of the island, particularly the opportunities to swim with local marine life, is consistently praised. The island also features amenities like restaurants and bars, making it a self-contained destination for a day trip.
For those looking for a hassle-free beach day with optional activities, Balmoral Island can be a great choice. However, travelers seeking a more authentic or budget-friendly experience might explore other options in Nassau or Paradise Island. Understanding what's included in your excursion package and being aware of potential extra costs is key to enjoying your visit.
Marine Life Encounters: Dolphins vs. Stingrays
The stingray encounter, on the other hand, involves swimming with rescued stingrays that have had their barbs trimmed. This experience is often highlighted as a more ethical interaction, with staff providing fish for feeding and allowing guests to swim in a netted area. Visitors can also purchase professional photos taken during the stingray encounter.
While both offer unique opportunities to get close to marine animals, the stingray encounter seems to garner more positive sentiment regarding animal welfare. For those prioritizing ethical animal tourism, the stingray experience might be the preferred choice.
The Beatles' 'Help!' Filming on Balmoral Island
This historical connection adds another layer of interest for visitors, blending a tropical getaway with a touch of rock and roll history. While the island is now primarily known for its beach club and excursions, this cinematic past is a fascinating footnote.
For Beatles fans, visiting Balmoral Island offers a chance to walk in the footsteps of legends, even if the island has evolved considerably since the filming days. It's a subtle nod to a bygone era amidst the modern-day resort experience.
