What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Zonderwater Italian Military Cemetery a fascinating and poignant historical site, praising its immaculate upkeep and the profound sense of remembrance it evokes. However, the strict appointment-only policy and weekday access can be a barrier for some, requiring careful planning to ensure a visit is possible.
"Fascinating bit of WW2 history but only week day visits. The area is guarded by the Correctional Services nowadays, from the local Cullinan prison. Originally the camp, was built alongside the mining village of Cullinan, hosting from April 1941 to January 1947, more than 100 000 Italian soldiers, who were captured by the British on the North and East Africa fronts.
Nowadays, this historic place is well kept and great to see that donations are flowing in, to keep the historical site neat and tidy. It's crazy that so many Italians died here so far from their beloved Italy.
War is sweet for those who haven't experienced it!!!"

"The grounds were beautifully kept and it is quite a special place (even from outside the gates) I had hoped to learn more about the history through a guided tour. Unfortunately, the site was closed upon our arrival during a weekday afternoon, and there was no information available onsite regarding opening hours or how to get in touch. It seems, according to another review, that appointments must be arranged via the consulate. Will be back for a proper tour."
