What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Ballroom Overhang as an impressive and unique natural wonder, particularly for its glow worms and the adventurous river crossings. However, many caution that the hike can be challenging, especially if it has rained, due to the numerous, potentially deep, and slippery river crossings. Proper footwear and checking conditions are frequently highlighted as crucial for a positive experience.
"The carpark is on the right hand side after crossing the fox river coming from greymouth. The track starts with the inland park track. It's a very beautiful track along the river. There are multiple river crossings, which is adventurous and challenging. The river is powerful and one should take care and a good look where to cross best. The ballroom overhang is very impressive and definitely worth it"

"It's a good walk on a mostly good track with some river crossings and river bank walking to reach the Ballroom Overhang. A 30m limestone Overhang where you can camp or of the rain. Beautiful scenery. A side stream called Welsh Creek is also worth a visit for is beautiful stream bed and cave at the end although the first 200m are tough to navigate."

"This was one of the best trips I have had in a long time.
Caution first....if it has been raining for a while or is looking like it will soon - dont go.
In the best possible conditions you will still get wet up to or a little over your knees.
You will have to cross the river about 8 times going up and the same on the return.
However if the weather is good and the river not too high you will find it well worth the walk.
An average hiker will take about 2 hours each way. This includes the current storm damage detours that are in place. There is not a lot of climbing to be done. You will have to content with a little bit of mud and some slippery rocks on some of the river crossings."

Navigating the River Crossings
Caution is paramount, especially if the river appears fast-flowing or discolored. If there's been significant rain, the river can become dangerous and impassable. Always check the weather forecast and river conditions before setting out. Some hikers find it helpful to use trekking poles for balance during these crossings.
While challenging, these river crossings add to the adventurous spirit of the hike. They are a key part of the experience that separates this destination from more manicured trails. Embrace the wet feet as part of the unique charm of the Ballroom Overhang.
The Magic of the Ballroom Overhang
One of the most enchanting aspects of the overhang, particularly for those who stay into the evening, is the presence of glow worms. These bioluminescent creatures create a breathtaking spectacle, dotting the ceiling of the overhang like a starry night sky. This natural light show is a highlight for many visitors and a truly unforgettable experience.
Beyond its visual appeal, the overhang offers a sense of remoteness and connection with nature. It's a place where you can escape the everyday and immerse yourself in the rugged beauty of the West Coast. The combination of the impressive rock formation and the ethereal glow worms makes it a truly special destination.
Exploring Welsh Creek
However, it's important to note that the initial 200 meters of navigating Welsh Creek can be quite challenging. The terrain might be rougher and require more effort to traverse than the main track. This section is best suited for those who are comfortable with off-trail exploration and don't mind a bit of a scramble.
Despite the potential difficulty, the reward of reaching the cave at the end of Welsh Creek is often considered worth the effort by those who venture there. It adds another layer of discovery to the trip, appealing to the more intrepid explorer looking for hidden gems.
