Reviews Summary
Visitors find Punakaiki Cavern a fascinating, easily accessible natural wonder. The cave's unique limestone formations and the potential to see glow worms are highlights. However, the lack of lighting and guidance can be a challenge for some, and parking can be limited.
"Awesome to see, hear and feel some of the powerful forces of nature. Easy walkway to the main viewing areas. Other trickier but fun areas you can choose to walk through, navigating the natural rock formations."
Linda
"Super easy to do, literally on the side of the road. There is a small parking bay across the road to park in, but can be busy.
Only takes a minute to walk down the stairs and up inside the entrance, so you don't need to be a physically fit person to enjoy."
Daryl Linton
"This cave entrance is at the edge of the main road, and there are no road signs before the location, so use maps. There is limited parking on the other side of the road close to the beach.
There are two entrances to the cave, one via the stairs and the other one across the garden. It's a short cave as seen from the first entrance and widens and even has an upper level and a lower level when you go inside. Best to carry a torch to see around. Second entrance is connected to the first one via a common passage.
It's cool inside, and very narrow in certain passages as you go further down. There is a small stream of water coming down in the middle of the cave.
Kids liked the place and wanted to explore further down. But without guidance we felt it was a bit risky to go further.
Would have been nice if there was guidance. No entry ticket either."
