Reviews Summary

Motukiekie Beach is hailed as a stunning, underrated West Coast gem, particularly praised for its dramatic sea stacks and vibrant tide pools, making it a photographer's paradise. Visitors rave about the unique landscape and the serene atmosphere, though careful planning around low tide is essential for full access and enjoyment. Some find the boulder navigation challenging, but most agree the effort is well worth the spectacular views.

"West Coast is so beautiful and so underrated. One of the locals took to this beach and to this specific point, which is only accessible during low tide.

It is a landscape photographers playground. So many different compositions are possible.

As the golden hour began, clouds rolled in, and the entire landscape completely changed, making it even more attractive. We had to finally just wrap up as it was getting late and the tide had started to come in. Otherwise I could have spent another hour exploiting various other compositions and just those last bit of sunlight bouncing off the clouds.

Highly recommend a visit to this place."

"Such an interesting beach walk. Well worth waiting for low tide and exploring. The crevices on the flat rocks are full of orange starfish. There's a multitude of interesting stones.... from greenstone to polished balls. Navigate the giant maze of boulders and enjoy the scenic sea stacks."

"An absolutely amazing hidden gem on the West Coast. A beach walk with stunning views (especially at sunset) and amazing natural features. You can only access the beach 2 hours either side of LOW tide so check the Low Tide times for Greymouth and plan your visit accordingly. You will find large concretions along the beach and if the weather is good you'll need a couple of hours for a leisurely walk and to have your lunch. 5k Nth of 10 Mile on the Coast Highway. Sign at Kararoa Creek. Park car and walk to Beach."

Travelers often emphasize the importance of checking local tide charts for Greymouth to avoid disappointment and ensure safe passage. Arriving too late means the water will have reclaimed the beach, obscuring the very features that make Motukiekie so unique. Reddit

During low tide, the beach transforms into a photographer's and explorer's paradise. The exposed seabed reveals a fascinating landscape of large concretions and a maze of giant boulders. It's during these hours that you can wander among the sea stacks, marvel at their formations, and peer into the shallow pools teeming with life. The experience is often described as serene and otherworldly, a stark contrast to the powerful ocean that usually dominates the coastline. Reddit+1
