What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
La Bocana is celebrated for its excellent surfing conditions and unique mud baths, offering a truly local experience. Visitors appreciate the delicious food at beachfront restaurants and the stunning sunrises. However, the strong currents make it unsuitable for swimming, and the beach can be quite hot with limited shade.
"Beautiful beach and a great spot for surfing.
I would not recommend swimming here, because of the strong current.
Playa La Bocana known for its surf, its mudbaths, its culinary school and its mezcal...Bocana has emerged as one of Huatulco's favorite regions and it's not difficult to understand why!
Turning off the coastal highway and onto a cobblestone road, Bocana quickly introduces its laidback beachy tones as visitors make their way to enjoy sand and surf.
With two long-time beachfront local restaurants serving basic Mexican fare, it's easy to pass an afternoon watching local surfers ride the waves. For those looking to cross surfing off their bucket lists, sign up for a class at the surf school!"

"This beach is outstanding! I went twice. Below are my findings.
1. It's basically empty except for a few people. There is little to no shade, so if that's your thing, bring some.
2. People build things out of the driftwood that washes ashore, and it's very cool to see.
3. The waves are big and strong, you can surf here early in the morning, and there is a local surf shop attached to a wicked restaurant that you can get gear from and potentially lessons. The food at this beach is SO GOOD.
4. If the adult men in your life get giddy as little kids when they play in the waves take them here, they will love it as much as my Dad and Brothers did.
5. There are cats, dogs, roosters, and ducks. They are mostly friendly, and love to be pet. It was delightful.
6. They are building a lot of condos in this zone, and there will probably be construction when you visit. If you have the opportunity to come before it gets gentrified by the rich, do so!
7. There are little spots to get massages up the streets. GET ONE. I've had over fifty massages in my that was the best I've ever had. So affordable and simply a nice little treat.
8. There are ladies with buckets of mud that chill by the beach. I highly recommend asking them to cover you in mud. It's very affordable, they give you a massage as well, and it leaves your skin so soft. Much like the people giving massages, they're hard working, adorable people and you should support them every chance you get!"

"Very beautiful beach with wonderful bird sanctuary. Waves are great for surfing, not so much for swimming. Beautiful sunrises."

Surfing at La Bocana
While the waves are exhilarating, it's crucial to be aware of the strong currents. These currents can be quite powerful, making casual swimming inadvisable. Surfers should exercise caution and be mindful of their abilities. The early morning hours often provide the best conditions, with cleaner waves and fewer crowds, making it an ideal time for a surf session.
The Unique Mud Baths and Local Crafts
Beyond the mud, you'll notice artfully crafted items made from driftwood that washes ashore. These unique sculptures and decorations add a rustic charm to the beach. Visitors often find themselves captivated by the creativity and resourcefulness displayed in these natural art installations. It's a testament to the beach's raw, natural beauty and the ingenuity of its visitors and locals.
Real Estate and Development
However, this development also means the area is undergoing gentrification. Some visitors express a desire to experience the beach's authentic, less-developed charm before it changes significantly. While new opportunities are emerging, the influx of development is a notable aspect of La Bocana's current landscape.
