What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find Gran Castello Historic House to be an insightful glimpse into historical domestic life, particularly appreciating the period rooms and picturesque courtyard. While some find the €5 individual entry a bit steep, the Cittadella Combo Ticket offers excellent value for exploring multiple sites. The main drawback is the lack of accessibility due to numerous steps.
"Bought the Cittadella Combo Ticket. €13 adults/ €9 seniors and students with proof of student ID / €7 children under 11. This price bought entrance to the Cittadella Visitor’s Center, Gozo Museum of Archaeology, The Old Prison, Gozo Nature Museum and the Gran Castello Historic House. All of these places were visited and the grounds were walked within a period of two and a half hours without any stops for bathroom, coffee or food. There are plenty of bathrooms and areas to eat, drink or snack.
The Gran Castello Historic House is a walk through of a life. There are bedrooms, kitchens, baby rooms, etc. if you enjoy period furniture and imagining the lives of the people before you, then you will enjoy this exhibit.
You must traverse steps. We went on an off season so there wasn’t that much traffic but during high tourist period I can imagine it would be more difficult to get past people in the hallways unless they restrict and control the number of visitors entering and exiting.
There is a video in the bedroom that runs continuously. The rooms open up onto a beautiful vista and garden. A bathroom is within this area. It is a lovely spot."

"Located in the Citadel, the real draw is the picturesque courtyard / balconies in this small museum. This is included with some other small museums as part of the Citadel visitor ticket. (€5)"

"This old-house-now-museum spans across a number of floors (not suitable for disabled visitors) and a labyrinth of rooms. There wasn't a huge amount of information about the rooms and their uses in the museum. It took around 20 mins to traverse. It was free as part of the combined ticket (see below).
Entry to the museum is €5 on its own (not good value) or €13 as part of a combined ticket that includes 5 Citadella museums (Cittadella visitor centre), museum of archaeology, old prison, Gran Castillo historic house, and nature museum) as well as the Ggantija Archeological park (€10 on its own, making the combined ticket worthwhile) and Ta Kola windmill."

A Glimpse into 16th-Century Life
While the house itself is not overly large, the detail in each room provides a rich narrative. The continuous video in the bedroom offers further context, and the rooms opening onto a beautiful vista and garden add a serene dimension to the visit. It’s a chance to connect with the past on a more personal level, understanding the crafts, trades, and hobbies that occupied people's lives.
It's important to note that the house's historic structure means it's spread across several floors and involves numerous steps. This makes it a challenging visit for those with mobility issues, a point frequently mentioned by visitors. However, for those who can navigate the stairs, it's a rewarding exploration of Gozitan heritage.
The Value of the Cittadella Combo Ticket
This combined ticket often extends to other Heritage Malta sites on Gozo, such as the Ggantija Archaeological Park and Ta' Kola Windmill, further enhancing its value. This makes it an economical choice for a comprehensive historical tour of Gozo. Visitors can easily spend a good portion of a day exploring all the included sites, gaining a deep appreciation for the island's rich history and culture.
When considering the ticket, factor in your itinerary. If you're only interested in a brief look at Gran Castello Historic House, the €5 individual entry might seem sufficient. However, the combo ticket unlocks a much broader historical experience, making it the preferred option for most tourists seeking to immerse themselves in Gozo's heritage.
