What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the breathtaking panoramic views offered from the bell tower, calling them a must-see for any trip. The historical significance and architectural beauty of the tower itself are also frequently highlighted. However, some find the climb strenuous, and a few mention concerns about safety due to open viewing areas.
"The bell tower of the Cathedral is one of the recognizable symbols of Vilnius. In the 17th century, a clock with two bells was installed in one of the oldest and highest towers of the Old Town. To this day, the large bell chimes every hour, and the small bell chimes every quarter of an hour.
The bell tower acquired its current appearance at the beginning of the 19th century. The 52 m high building (57 m with the cross) is a cultural heritage site of Vilnius.
The bell tower offers a breathtaking panorama, as well as a view of three sculptures above the pediment of the Cathedral, one of which is an image of St. Casimir.
Citizens and visitors of the city who climb the bell tower can see an exhibition of bells, an old city clock, and study historical reconstructions of previous views of the bell tower and the Cathedral."

"Its a landmark for Lithuania, the Cathedral also beautiful. The city is soooo quiet, everyone is so mindful and respectful. Pictures its a must in every part of the city lovely downtown."
Zahira Fernandez
"The freestanding, 52-metre-high bell tower of Vilnius Cathedral began its life as a defensive tower of the 14th-century Lower Castle (the loopholes are still visible). It is assumed that the tower served as a bell tower as early as the 15th century and was raised with an octagonal Gothic-style storey. The tower was raised twice more (in 1550 and 1598) and after the fire of 1610, the damaged bell tower had to be renovated in addition to the church. Due to its age and unstable subsoil, the tower now leans slightly."

The Climb: A Journey Through History
Be prepared for a workout! The number of steps can range from a few hundred to over 500, so comfortable footwear is essential. The experience is often described as immersive, offering a unique perspective on the cathedral's structure and its place within the urban landscape.
Many towers now feature small exhibitions showcasing historical bells, old clock mechanisms, and reconstructions of past city views. This adds an educational layer to the physical exertion, making the climb a multi-faceted cultural experience.
Capturing the City: Photography from Above
For the best photographic results, timing is crucial. Visiting during the 'golden hour' – the period shortly after sunrise or before sunset – bathes the city in warm, soft light, creating dramatic shadows and vibrant colors. While midday offers clear views, the light can be harsh, leading to washed-out photos. Consider bringing a wide-angle lens to encompass the full sweep of the cityscape.
Beyond the grand panoramas, look for interesting architectural details on the tower itself and the buildings below. Some towers offer open windows or viewing platforms that provide unobstructed shots, allowing you to capture the essence of the city from a truly unique angle.
The Sound of History: Bell Ringing Traditions
Experiencing the ringing of these ancient bells can be a powerful auditory event. Some towers offer behind-the-scenes glimpses into the bell chamber, allowing visitors to see the massive bells up close and learn about the art and history of campanology (bell ringing). This provides a deeper appreciation for the cultural significance of these structures beyond their visual appeal.
These traditions connect visitors to the living history of the city. Hearing the bells toll from high above offers a unique sensory experience that complements the visual splendor of the panoramic views.
