Chantalle de Witte

"A lovely gem of a workshop/shop. The place is filled to the brim with handmade wooden ornaments and crafts. These guys seem to be wholesalers so all the local and national shops and sellers buy from here and sell elsewhere at a markup. You can buy the same items here at a much lower cost. Would definitely recommend going here. You only need to ensure you’ve got a big enough case! Oh and ask to visit the workshop area where you’ll see the items being carved!"

Sanjay Myangar

The people are super friendly and not intrusive. They like to talk to you. Very open and incredibly talented craftsmen. bought some things. 🫶🏻"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Art of Akamba Wood Carving

The Akamba Handicrafts Cooperative is a hub for traditional Akamba wood carving, a skill passed down through generations. Artisans here transform raw wood into intricate masterpieces using simple tools, a process that highlights their dedication and artistry. You can witness this firsthand by visiting the workshops, where the air is filled with the scent of wood and the sounds of carving. It's a chance to see how raw materials become stunning works of art without the aid of modern machinery. Reddit

From delicate figurines to functional household items, the range of products is impressive. Each piece tells a story and reflects the cultural heritage of the Akamba people. The use of local woods, like the naturally black ebony tree, is particularly noteworthy. This wood requires minimal treatment, often just polishing, to reveal its inherent beauty, making the finished products both unique and striking. Reddit

Interacting with the artisans offers a deeper appreciation for their craft. They are known for being friendly and open, often happy to share insights into their techniques and the symbolism behind their designs. This personal connection makes the shopping experience more meaningful and allows you to take home not just a souvenir, but a piece of Akamba culture. Reddit

Smart Souvenir Shopping

For travelers looking for authentic souvenirs, the Akamba Handicrafts Cooperative is a must-visit. Unlike many tourist shops, this cooperative operates as a wholesale point, meaning you can purchase high-quality, handmade items at significantly lower prices than you would find elsewhere in Nairobi. This direct-from-the-maker approach ensures you're getting genuine value for your money. Reddit

When you visit, remember to ask to see the workshops. This not only provides an educational experience but also allows you to appreciate the labor and skill that goes into each item. Seeing the artisans at work can also help you decide which pieces resonate most with you. Be prepared to be tempted; many visitors find themselves buying more than they initially planned due to the quality and affordability. Reddit

Pro-tip: Bring an extra bag or ensure your luggage has ample space. The beautiful, handcrafted items are often impulse buys, and you'll want to bring your treasures home safely. While prices are already competitive, for larger purchases, a polite inquiry about a small discount might be possible, but the primary advantage is the wholesale pricing. Reddit
