What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Travelers generally praise the Mombasa SGR for its comfort, efficiency, and modern infrastructure, especially in premium class. While the journey is smooth and scenic, some minor service details and restrictions could be improved for a truly premium feel. The addition of the commuter rail has greatly enhanced accessibility.
"Mombasa SGR Premium Review: Comfort with a Few Quirks
Is it on the higher end? Yes — tickets are about KES 12,000.
But is it worth it? Honestly, yes.
You also get access to a lounge while waiting to board. However, if you arrive early, you’ll still end up standing in line at the gate — which doesn’t exactly scream “premium.” Another point off there.
You’ll enjoy the ride, especially if you’re looking to relax. It’s hard to get bored when you’re dozing off — the seats recline fully into a flatbed, and you can ask for an extra blanket (though mine took a few reminders to arrive — that’s one point off).
Food is served onboard — nothing gourmet, just decent and as expected. And that’s okay.
The charging setup is a win: a touch charger is built right into your seat area. Just place your phone on it and it starts charging — no cables needed.
And if you’re hoping to sip wine in a glass, think again. It’s served in a plastic cup — very uni party throwback. Another 4/5 moment.
Overall: 4 out of 5
Comfortable, smooth, and restful — with a few details that could use a premium polish"

Information well labeled. Announcements on transfers is clearly and audibly given for new travellers. There are also other private transfers to further towns like malindi. Safe and efficient."

"I experienced some challenges with the service while travelling in Premium class. However, the journey through the Tsavo was definitely a memorable highlight. I believe that with some service improvements, this experience could be even better."

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
While the premium class offers more space and comfort with flatbed seats, the economy class is a more budget-conscious choice for families. Ensure you pack snacks and drinks, keeping in mind that alcohol is restricted. The onboard dining is decent, but having familiar snacks can be helpful for picky eaters. The punctuality of the SGR means you won't have to worry about long delays, making it easier to manage children's schedules.
💰 Budget Travelers
When traveling on the main SGR line, opting for economy class is significantly cheaper than premium. Economy tickets are priced around Kshs. 1,500, offering a comfortable ride without the premium price tag. While you won't get the flatbed seats or lounge access of premium, economy class still provides a pleasant and efficient journey. Booking in advance is always recommended, even for economy, to ensure availability, especially during peak travel times.
✈️ Day-Trippers & Short Stays
For those arriving or departing via the SGR, the punctuality of the trains is a significant advantage for tight schedules. The terminus itself is aesthetically pleasing and well-organized, making for a smooth transition. Consider utilizing the commuter rail for short hops within Mombasa or as a quick link to the main SGR for longer excursions, ensuring you make the most of your limited time.

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
Navigating to and from the Mombasa SGR Terminus
For those heading to other destinations from the terminus, such as Malindi or Nyali, there are several options. You can take a matatu from the SGR terminus towards town, then a tuk-tuk to the bus station to catch buses or matatus heading to Malindi, Tana River, or Lamu. These routes often pass by or near the SGR terminus. Private transfer services are also readily available at the terminus, providing convenient connections to various coastal towns and attractions.
It's important to note that the SGR train itself operates on a strict schedule. Arriving late means risking missing your train, so punctuality is key. The check-in process, while necessary, can be a bit tedious, involving luggage scanning and ticket verification.
The Premium SGR Experience
Onboard amenities enhance the premium feel. You'll find integrated touch-charging ports built directly into your seat area, allowing for effortless phone charging without the need for cables. Food is served during the journey; while not gourmet, it's described as decent and satisfactory. For premium passengers, a server will present the available meal options for you to choose from.
However, there are a few quirks that prevent it from being a flawless premium experience. Alcohol is served, but notably in plastic cups rather than glasses, which some find a bit of a letdown. Additionally, while the seats are comfortable, receiving requested amenities like extra blankets might occasionally require a reminder. Despite these minor points, the overall experience is considered comfortable, smooth, and restful, with the scenic views of Tsavo National Park adding to the memorable journey.
Understanding SGR Luggage and Restrictions
This means that while the train offers a comfortable and convenient way to travel, it's essential to pack mindfully and adhere to the regulations. It's always a good idea to check the official Kenya Railways guidelines for any specific prohibited items before your travel date.
Beyond specific item restrictions, the general check-in process involves luggage scanning. While this is a standard security measure, it's part of the procedure that travelers should be prepared for.
