What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Cape Kamui for its stunning 'Shakotan Blue' sea and breathtaking panoramic views, calling it a must-visit natural wonder. The accessible hiking trail to the lighthouse is a major draw, though some mention the presence of insects and the need for clear directions to parking.
"Beautiful spot, worth a visit if you're in the area. If you come by car please see the attached map, as someone in the reviews already explained where to park. You can park at the information centre free of charge and the trail begins from the side of the main road. There is a lookout tower at the end of the trail. Visited late September, many insects were present, mostly fruit-flies"

"Took some time to find the parking. You may google for "Shakotan Sight Seeing Information Center
一般社団法人積丹観光協会" to get to the parking spot. From there, it is a 2 min walk to the entrance of the hike (different entrance from the one near the tunnel). From the entrance, it was a 10 min walk to the observatory. Recommend to have insect repellent on."

"Date: 5 September 2025
Why: Randomly rented a car from sapporo and drove out to yoichi for a day as the city itself was boring. Did not have much concrete plans. Had to return our car in Sapporo by 6pm so we didn’t go to cape kamui.
Where: As other comments mentioned, go to the Shokutan Sightseeing Office first. You can grab an ice cream first. Head to the back of it and follow the google maps route through the forest.
Who:
- 60+ year old parents
The experience:
- We were a little scared as there were bear sightings in another forest near the area (but not this particular trail). NGL it really was a little scary as we could see and smell animal poop and there were not many people. We saw a total of 5 people, only while going down.
- The hike up is extremely short. Expect around 10 minutes to go up.
- Nice to view the sea. It is pretty.
Overall:
- A nice and quick pitstop. Be braver than me!"
