I visited the historic Nikka distillery and had the chance to explore the origins of Japanese whisky. It was founded in the 1930s by Masataka Taketsuru - the father of this iconic spirit. Tourists can now visit the original factory in Yoichi, a town west of Sapporo, close to Otaru. What I like about having whisky is experiencing culture, tradition, and appreciation of heritage through the drink. #...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Yoichi Nikka Distillery for its immersive tours, historical significance, and the quality of its whisky. The free tasting and the opportunity to purchase exclusive bottles are major draws. While the tours are primarily in Japanese, the availability of English translations makes it accessible. Some find the paid tastings expensive, and booking in advance is crucial for the full experience.

"I was lucky getting the free reserved tour a day before visiting and this was definitely a fulfilling experience! The guided tour was comprehensive and introduced the history, production process and different buildings before proceeding to the free tasting session. I preferred those more exclusive whisky and went to try out those offerings at tasting bar. Amongst the three Yoichi key malts and the single cask, the Peaty and Salty suited my liking the most. Lastly, visiting in summer was a plus and the lavenders were in full bloom!
Note: Only the distillery museum, paid tasting bar and distillery shop are open to visitors without reservation."

"Not very languages friendly free guided tours except for Japanese with online reservation only.

They produced Peat/smokey taste whiskey mainly but also have some other too.

The entire distillery is a historical site. The guided tours will less about 40 minutes.

There is a small museum, restaurant and gift shop."

Steven Cheng

"My husband and I had a blast, doing the free tour here at the distillery. He's a huge fan of the Nikka whiskey products. An hour tour gives you a tour guide who will walk you through the entire property and explain the delicate and complex steps taken to produce their fine whiskey. That, topped with a free tasting (must be over 20+ age) to end the tour, and we loved it. There is an audio tour available to visitors who do not speak Japanese, that can be downloaded on your phone. The English version we used was a big help.

You can book reservations in advance online or by phone, and it's super easy and convenient. Note, they do the tour regardless of rain or shine, and we did the tour during a light rain. So be ready to dress for the weather!"
