What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Ancient Theatre of Taormina for its breathtaking views of Mount Etna and the sea, combined with its rich historical significance. Many find it a magical and unforgettable experience, especially when attending a performance. However, some note issues with accessibility for strollers and a lack of detailed information or upkeep in certain areas.
"The queens performance is amazing. The feel is stunning. It’s really nice to see such an ancient architecture to still be used as it was designed to be that function——as a theater. The structure of that architecture make sure that the voice is echoed with grace. The view of the Bay and the mountain Etna or combining with the beautiful architecture and the wonderful performance. Really enjoyed on my time here.."

"An absolute must-see in Taormina! Teatro Antico di Taormina is breathtaking — the combination of ancient history and incredible views over the sea and Mount Etna is unforgettable. The theater itself is very well preserved, and it’s amazing to imagine the performances that once took place here.
We loved walking through the site and taking in the scenery from every angle. It’s one of those places that truly transports you back in time. Highly recommend visiting early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the crowds and enjoy the lighting.
A highlight of our trip to Sicily — don’t miss it!"

"We had high expectations. The overall view was good, you can see the etna between the pillars! But the accessibility with baby stroller is not good. We had to carry our child most of the time. There were audio tours apparently but we did not know, we got zero information or instructions or tips.
The information billboards are often faded. I am sure there is more info to show, tell or present than is done now.. also the place was a mess, probably due to some preparations for an upcoming show
I would still recommend to see this place, because of the great view and the rich history, but the experience could be so much better with a map and interactive elements or displays."

A Glimpse into History
Walking through the ruins, you can still discern the distinct sections of a classical theatre: the orchestra, the stage (skene), and the seating tiers (cavea). The sheer scale and preservation of the theatre are awe-inspiring, allowing visitors to vividly imagine the spectacles that unfolded here millennia ago. It’s a place where history feels palpable, connecting you directly to the ancient world.
Today, the theatre continues its legacy as a venue for cultural events, hosting concerts, operas, and festivals. Attending a performance here is a truly unique experience, combining world-class entertainment with an unparalleled historical setting. The blend of ancient architecture, the breathtaking views, and the vibrant atmosphere creates an unforgettable memory.
Capturing the Iconic Views
For the best photographic opportunities, timing is crucial. Visiting during the golden hour – shortly after sunrise or before sunset – bathes the theatre and the landscape in a warm, soft light, creating dramatic shadows and vibrant colors. Early mornings are also ideal for avoiding crowds, allowing you to capture unobstructed shots of the theatre against the serene sea and sky.
When framing your shots, experiment with different angles. Capture the grandeur of the theatre’s architecture with the natural landscape beyond, or focus on the intricate details of the ancient stonework. The contrast between the man-made ruins and the powerful natural elements makes for compelling imagery. Remember to also look for unique perspectives from the upper seating tiers.
Experiencing Taormina Beyond the Theatre
Don't miss the chance to indulge in Sicilian culinary delights. Taormina is renowned for its delicious food, from fresh seafood to traditional pastries. Trying a pistachio croissant for breakfast or a refreshing Sicilian granita (often served with brioche) is a quintessential experience. Street food, like the famous arancini, is also a must-try.
For a different perspective, take the cable car down to the coast to visit the stunning Isola Bella beach. This small island nature reserve is connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of sand, offering beautiful scenery and clear waters. Enjoying a cocktail with a sea view is also a popular pastime.
