What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the absolutely breathtaking, unforgettable panoramic views from Castello Saraceno, calling it a mandatory stop in Sicily. The friendly staff and historical significance are also praised. However, the strenuous uphill climb and the limited remaining castle structures for the admission price are noted drawbacks.
"Staff was super friendly. If you're not a big fan of history, the views will pay out for the ticket. It's breathtaking! There's a big binoculars at the top of the castle, we didn't know how to use it as there were no instructions for it.
There's a long walk up the stair from Taormina center, I don't recommend it during hot weather or of you're not fit enough.
We also wanted to take the bus but after a 40 min wait it never arrived so we went down some stairs straight to Taormina center. It's hard on the knees, lots of stairs."

"The church and the castle are both beautiful. The walk up is difficult but if you’re generally fit you’ll find it fine.
There is a lovely restaurant up there but a bit pricey and a small cafe where you can sit and enjoy the view.
You can walk down from the castle right into Taormina centre by some long stairs which are well maintained."

"An absolutely unforgettable visit. The Castle of Taormina is a magical place, full of history with views that leave you breathless. From the top you can see the whole city, the sea shining in the background and in front, the majestic Etna dominating the landscape. It's simply spectacular! The staff was very friendly, always willing to help and make you feel very welcome. If you are in Sicily, this is a mandatory stop. 🌋🌅🇮🇹"

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Once at the top, the expansive views can be captivating for kids, offering a sense of adventure and a chance to spot distant landmarks. However, supervision is crucial due to the heights and uneven terrain. The castle itself offers limited interactive elements for children, so the primary appeal will be the scenery and the 'conquest' of reaching the top. Pack plenty of snacks and drinks to keep energy levels up.
🚶 Budget Travelers
Consider the €10 admission fee as an investment in one of the most stunning views in Sicily. While the castle itself is not extensive, the panoramic vistas are a major highlight that can be enjoyed without additional spending once inside. Visiting during off-peak hours might also offer a more relaxed experience without the premium price tag.
📸 Photography Enthusiasts
Don't miss the opportunity to photograph the distant views of Calabria and the iconic Greek Theatre. Even the remaining stone walls and architectural remnants of the castle itself can provide interesting photographic subjects. Be prepared for the climb, as the best vantage points are at the highest accessible points of the castle.

While the stairs are well-maintained, they can be tough on the knees for some. An alternative is to attempt to use the local bus service, though reviews suggest that wait times can be considerable, and the bus may not always arrive as scheduled. This means having a backup plan or being prepared for a potentially lengthy wait is wise. For those seeking a more direct route, taxis are available, though they will be more expensive than public transport or walking.
Ultimately, the effort of the climb is often deemed worthwhile for the spectacular views that await at the summit. Planning your visit for the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late afternoon, can significantly enhance the comfort of the journey and the overall experience.
