Visit Salerno Cathedral with a beautiful quadriportico and the crypt, where the Evangelist Matthew is buried. As a Christian, this was a sacred visit for me with the mortal remains of San Matteo believe to be held here since 954 AD. The paintings are exquisitely preserved and show the Gospels in beautiful detail. Even if you are not a believer, it’s a stunning place to behold. One of the many hidd...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the breathtaking panoramic views from the Facciatone and the rich collection of art and historical artifacts within the Duomo Museum and Crypt. The 'Porta del Cielo' ticket is highly recommended for its value and comprehensive access. However, a few reviews mention negative interactions with staff, detracting from an otherwise beautiful experience.

"The way to visiting the Facciatone with the greatest views starts here, with the Opera della Metropolitana museum. If you bought the Porta del Cielo ticket (hightly recommended, buy in advance), you have this place included. The museum hosts some interesting exhibitions, mainly relics and religious paintings.
For the Facciatone, there is a line that forms at the top floor and only 15 people go up at a time for up to 10-15 minutes. We waited 2 lines until going inside (30 minutes) in July, but there was available seating before going up.
The views from above are amazing! I highly recommend going to the top for it is one of the best viewpoints in the city (see photos below)."

Ana-Maria Anghel

"Very nice museum and the highlight is the scenic panoramic view of Siena from the walkway on the top of the tower. It's good value to buy the combo ticket in the duomo."

Ilan Carmel

"Great museum which also allows you to climb the old panoramic facade.

You will need to purchase a ticket and I suggest the €23 pass which gives you entry to the Cathedral, allows you to climb panoramic facade, the Mini Library, the Bapistry, the Museum, the Crypt and to walk the nave in the Cathedral (The Gate of Heaven).

The museum houses both beautiful paintings and sculptures. The round stained glass window just as you enter is an absolute standout.

We entered at 11am and didn't have to queue at all. I would suggest going early in the day to avoid the crowds.

The views from the facade wall are also well worth the visit.

The small chapel which is now the gifts shop will take your breath away as you exit."

Tailored advice for your travel style

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

The Duomo complex, including the Crypt and Museum, can be engaging for older children who appreciate history and art. The Facciatone offers an exciting adventure with its climb and incredible views, which kids often find thrilling. However, the Crypt itself might be less captivating for very young children due to its historical and religious nature.

Consider the 'Porta del Cielo' ticket for families, as it allows access to multiple areas, providing varied experiences. Pack snacks and water, and be prepared for a good amount of walking and stairs, especially for the Facciatone. The museum's impressive stained-glass window and sculptures can also capture young imaginations.

💰 Budget Travelers

Alternatively, prioritize the Facciatone if the views are your main goal, as this is a significant part of the 'Porta del Cielo' ticket. Research if any combination tickets offer access to just the museum and Facciatone, or consider visiting during off-peak hours when crowds might be thinner, potentially leading to shorter queues if you opt for a more limited ticket.
