What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the stunning, colorful villages and breathtaking coastal views, especially from Manarola and Riomaggiore. The hiking trails offer incredible scenery, though some find them challenging. The local food and wine are also frequently praised.
"A 1-hour hike that can be quite exhausting as it starts with some very steep and not well maintained stairs. It is not necessarily difficult, but you need to be careful in certain areas and depending on the whether it can get very hot along the way. The view was nice, but nothing spectacular."
Costin Badici
"Okay so we walked/climbed the trail from Manarola to Riomaggiore after having walked from Manarola to Corniglia via Volastra the previous day. I must say the hike to Riomaggiore was much less scenic than the other, harder and much less enjoyable. Okay if you want to say you’ve done it fine. However I think save your knees and either take the ferry or train the one stop.
Though I can truly recommend the hike to Corniglia, it was 2 hours but the terrain is kinder though steep, the views breathtaking! A stop in Volastra was a pleasant pause and a chance to see accommodation that is not over crowded with incredible views with peace and quiet if that’s your thing. In any case enjoy Cinque Terre!"

"BEWARE: if you think it's a valid way to get from Riomaggiore to Manarola (or inverse) it is not. It's a steep hike, nothing technically demanding, but there is quite an elevation change. In 30°C heat you'll be drained in sweat and probably overheated. Trail itself is ok if you treat is as an excercise because is not too scenic either. If I were to do it again I would go for the Azure trail by the sea. As it turned out it's cheaper than the train."

🚇 🗺️ Getting There
The nearest major airport is Pisa. From Pisa, you can take a train to La Spezia Centrale, which is the gateway to Cinque Terre. The train journey takes about 1.5 hours. From La Spezia, you can then use the local Cinque Terre train to reach each village.
Driving directly into the villages is highly restricted and parking is very limited and expensive. It's best to park in La Spezia or Levanto and use the train.
You can travel between Manarola and Riomaggiore by train (a very short ride), by ferry (offering coastal views), or by hiking the Blue Trail (Sentiero Azzurro), though this trail can be steep and challenging.
Genoa (GOA) and Florence (FLR) are also viable airport options, with Genoa being slightly closer. From either, you'll need to take a train to La Spezia.
Many travelers choose to stay in one of the five villages, or in nearby towns like Levanto or La Spezia for more accommodation options and easier access.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
Yes, a Cinque Terre Card is required to access the main coastal hiking trails, including the Blue Trail (Sentiero Azzurro). This card also covers unlimited train travel between the five villages.
The cost varies depending on the duration (1-day, 2-day). It's generally more economical than buying individual train tickets if you plan to hike and use the train frequently. Check the official Cinque Terre National Park website for current pricing.
While the main Blue Trail requires a card, there are other higher trails that may not require a fee, but they are often more challenging and less scenic.
Yes, you can purchase the Cinque Terre Card online in advance to save time, especially during peak season.
The trails are generally accessible during daylight hours. However, they can be closed due to weather conditions or maintenance, so it's always best to check the official park website for updates.
🎫 🏞️ Onsite Experience
All five villages – Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore – offer unique charm. Manarola and Riomaggiore are particularly famous for their picturesque views. Vernazza is often cited as the prettiest.
Reviews are mixed. Some find it steep, hot, and less scenic than other trails, recommending the train or ferry instead. Others enjoy it as a challenging hike with rewarding views.
Manarola offers iconic viewpoints overlooking the colorful village. Riomaggiore also has stunning spots, especially around the harbor.
Many suggest 3 days to explore without rushing, allowing time for hiking, village visits, and relaxation. Some can see all 5 in one day by train if time is limited.
Pack light, comfortable clothing, sturdy walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle. A swimsuit is also recommended for swimming in the sea.
🍽️ 🍽️ Food & Dining
Don't miss the fresh pesto (Liguria is its birthplace!), focaccia, seafood (especially fried cones), and local wines like Sciacchetrà.
Yes, both villages offer a range of trattorias and restaurants. Look for places serving fresh, local ingredients. Some popular spots are mentioned by locals.
Dining can be moderately expensive, especially in tourist-heavy areas. Consider grabbing focaccia or a fried seafood cone for a more budget-friendly meal.
Gelaterias are abundant throughout Cinque Terre. Look for artisanal shops that use fresh, local ingredients for the best flavors.
While seafood and pesto are prominent, many restaurants offer vegetable-based dishes like focaccia, pasta with vegetables, and salads. It's always good to ask about options.

Golden hour, both sunrise and sunset, offers magical light for capturing the colorful villages. Midday can be harsh, but still offers vibrant colors.
The viewpoint overlooking Manarola from the west, often accessed via a short walk from the harbor, is incredibly popular for photos.
Drone usage is generally restricted in national parks and protected areas like Cinque Terre to preserve the environment and visitor experience. Always check local regulations.
A wide-angle lens is great for capturing the dramatic landscapes and village clusters. A telephoto lens can be useful for details. A good phone camera is also sufficient for many shots.
Visit very early in the morning or later in the evening. Explore less-trafficked paths or side streets for unique perspectives away from the main crowds.

👨👩👧 Families with Kids
While the Blue Trail hike might be challenging for very young children, shorter, flatter walks within villages or boat trips along the coast can be enjoyable alternatives. Pack plenty of snacks and water, and be prepared for stairs. The colorful villages and the 'Luca' movie connection can spark kids' imaginations.
🚶♀️ Solo Travelers
Consider staying in a hostel or a guesthouse to meet people. Engaging with locals or joining a small group tour can also enhance the experience. Don't be afraid to strike up conversations – many visitors are happy to share tips and recommendations.
💰 Budget Travelers
Opt for picnics with local produce from markets or grab delicious and budget-friendly focaccia and fried seafood cones from street vendors instead of dining in restaurants for every meal. Hiking the trails (with the appropriate card) is a free activity once you have your pass.

Navigating the Cinque Terre Trails
For those seeking a more challenging but rewarding experience, the higher trails offer breathtaking panoramic views. For instance, the hike from Manarola to Corniglia via Volastra is highly recommended for its stunning scenery and a more tranquil atmosphere.
Key takeaway: Always be prepared for stairs and elevation changes, wear appropriate footwear, and carry plenty of water. The train and ferry are excellent alternatives if hiking isn't your priority or if trails are closed.
Experiencing the Villages: Manarola & Riomaggiore
Riomaggiore, the southernmost village, boasts a charming harbor and steep, narrow streets lined with pastel-colored buildings. It's a great place to explore on foot, perhaps enjoying a cone of fried seafood as you wander. The castle offers elevated views of the village and coastline.
Both villages are easily accessible by train, making them convenient to visit. While they can get crowded, exploring the smaller alleyways can offer a more intimate experience.
Culinary Delights of Liguria
Given its coastal location, fresh seafood is a highlight. Look for dishes like fried anchovies or seafood pasta. For a quick and tasty snack, grab a cone of fritto misto (mixed fried seafood) from a street vendor.
Don't forget to sample the local wines, particularly the sweet dessert wine, Sciacchetrà, produced from grapes grown on the terraced vineyards. Enjoying a meal with a view of the sea is an essential part of the Cinque Terre experience.
