come w/ me to explore some of Oregon's bluest, coldest water 🥶 About the hike: 🌲 ~4 miles round trip 🥾 Mostly shaded trail, moderate difficulty (especially down to the pool) ❄️ Water is ~37° year round 🚗 Parking fills up fast—go early! 📍 ~1 hr from Bend, ~1.5 hrs from Eugene, ~2.5 hrs from Portland ⚠️ If you’re planning to jump, be safe and make sure others are around in case you need help. #tam...

Reviews Summary

This hike is highly recommended for its breathtaking views and sense of accomplishment, though it's often described as more challenging than anticipated. While the coastal path can be closed, alternative routes offer stunning vineyard scenery. Proper footwear and a reasonable fitness level are key for enjoying this picturesque Cinque Terre experience. Reddit+1

"Super fun, great hike. I do feel that the internet makes it sound easier than it is. Some places were challenging with where ti step and the surfaces were pretty difficult to navigate too. The path markings were great and it felt like you cannot get lost (which I cannot emphasize enough is a great thing). Beyond that, it was worth every penny. The views were amazing and so is the sense of accomplishment when you hike down the final flight of stairs.

The one bad thing I have to say is that there was a part of the hike that was unavailable, which is from Manarola to Corniglia. This is supposed to be fixed by 2026-2028 but since I went in 2025 and am posting this in 2025, this is relevant.

10/10 would suggest to anyone who likes hiking."

"Wow. Loved this walk so much. I did it in just under 2 hours but also at 7am when it was quite cool.

Definitely recommend starting from Manarola direction as the steps are well formed whereas the climb out of Corniglia is quite rocky and uneven- easier to descend.

Was a good walk as you climbed up quite high for the first 30-40mins then enjoyed a flat walk with amazing views throughout the grapevines before a slow descent. Very well signposted."

Zoe richards

"Super place lovely walks and great villages, you have to have a reasonable level of fitness and sensible footwear."

🚇 🗺️ Getting There

No, private car access is restricted in Cinque Terre villages. The best way to reach them is by train from La Spezia or Levanto. TikTok

If the coastal path is closed, you can take higher inland trails that wind through vineyards. These are more challenging but offer spectacular views. Check the Cinque Terre National Park website for specific route information. Reddit

🎫 🥾 Onsite Experience

The Blue Trail is considered moderately difficult. While some sections are relatively flat, there are steep ascents and descents, particularly the stairs into Corniglia. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended. Reddit+1

Sturdy hiking shoes or trail runners with good grip are essential. The paths can be uneven, rocky, and slippery, especially after rain. Avoid sandals or flip-flops. Reddit

There are no dedicated restaurants directly on the trail itself. However, you'll find plenty of dining options in Corniglia and Manarola before or after your hike. TikTok

If the coastal path is open, it typically takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. If you're using the inland alternative routes, it can take significantly longer, potentially 3-4 hours or more. Reddit

For Different Travelers

Tailored advice for your travel style

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

The Blue Trail can be challenging for families with very young children due to the steep stairs and uneven terrain. If the coastal path is open, it's more manageable, but still requires careful supervision. Consider using the train to hop between villages and enjoy shorter, less strenuous walks within the villages themselves. TikTok

For families seeking a more accessible experience, focus on exploring the villages of Manarola and Riomaggiore, which have flatter areas and more direct access to the water. The shuttle bus in Corniglia can help bypass the initial climb. Always prioritize safety and ensure children have appropriate footwear. TikTok

🚶 Budget Travelers

The Cinque Terre Card is essential for hikers, but it also grants access to shuttle buses within villages and discounts on some attractions. Purchasing this card is more economical than buying individual train tickets for multiple village hops. TikTok

Pack your own snacks and water to save money on expensive tourist-priced items in the villages. Consider staying in nearby towns like La Spezia or Levanto, which offer more affordable accommodation options and easy train access to Cinque Terre. TikTok

📸 Photography Enthusiasts

The Blue Trail offers incredible photographic opportunities, especially the views of Manarola from the harbor and the terraced vineyards. Aim for early mornings or late afternoons for the best light and fewer crowds. TikTok

Don't forget to capture the unique charm of Corniglia perched high on the cliffs. A wide-angle lens is recommended to encompass the stunning coastal vistas and the intricate village architecture. TikTok

Deep Dives

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Navigating Trail Closures

The Blue Trail (Sentiero Azzurro), particularly the coastal segments, is unfortunately prone to closures due to landslides and maintenance. The section between Corniglia and Manarola is frequently affected. Travelers are advised to always check the official Cinque Terre National Park website for the most up-to-date information before their visit. Reddit

When the coastal path is closed, don't despair! Higher inland trails, such as the Via dei Santuari, offer a more challenging but equally rewarding experience. These routes wind through terraced vineyards and olive groves, providing stunning panoramic views of the coastline and villages from above. While they require more effort and time, they often feel less crowded and offer a different perspective on the Cinque Terre landscape. Reddit

Key takeaway: Always have a backup plan and be prepared to use the inland trails. These alternative routes are well-marked and offer a fantastic way to experience the region's natural beauty and agricultural heritage. Reddit

The Corniglia Experience

Corniglia stands out from the other four Cinque Terre villages as it's the only one not directly situated on the sea. Instead, it's perched high on a rocky promontory, offering a unique perspective and a bit of a workout to reach. Visitors arriving by train must ascend the Lardarina, a steep staircase of 382 steps, or take a shuttle bus to reach the village center. TikTok

This elevated position means Corniglia offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding coastline and vineyards. The village itself is charming and less crowded than its seaside counterparts, with narrow, winding alleys and a more authentic, local feel. It's a great place to escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy a quieter moment. TikTok

For hikers, the descent from Corniglia to Manarola (or vice versa) is a significant part of the experience. While the climb up from Manarola is often described as more manageable, the descent into Corniglia involves navigating a steep, rocky path that requires careful footing. Reddit+1

Vineyard Trails & Local Produce

The hiking trails in Cinque Terre, especially the inland routes, are carved through centuries-old terraced vineyards. These agricultural marvels are not only beautiful but also crucial to the region's identity, producing local wines like Sciacchetrà. Walking these paths offers a glimpse into the traditional way of life and the hard work involved in cultivating these steep slopes. Reddit

As you hike, you'll often see locals tending to their crops. The air is filled with the scent of grapes, herbs, and the sea. Many travelers rave about the spectacular views that unfold around every bend, with the vibrant green of the vines contrasting with the deep blue of the Ligurian Sea. Reddit+1

Don't miss the opportunity to sample local produce. While there aren't many stops directly on the trail, the villages of Corniglia and Manarola offer opportunities to taste local wines, pesto, and fresh seafood. TikTok+1
