Reviews Summary

Visitors often describe Chiesa di Santa Chiara as a beautiful and historically significant church, sometimes referred to as the 'jewel of Crotone.' Many appreciate its intricate facade and the artistry of its interior, particularly the marble altar. The experience can be greatly enhanced by finding someone knowledgeable to share its history.

"Church...nice"

Corneliu Chirica

"Small church, very beautiful if you find a lady inside who will explain the history to you."

Enrico 74

"Santa Chiara was part of the Poor Clares' convent, founded at the end of the 13th century (in 1916, the three remaining nuns left the dilapidated convent). Over the centuries, the church was expanded and restored until it reached its present form, completed and consecrated in 1774 by the Bishop of Crotone, G. Capocchiani. The façade is divided into three registers, separated only by decorative elements. The portal, in the Classical-Baroque style, has two pilasters resting on a high base, with a Doric capital surmounted by an entablature of the same style. A small aedicule houses the statue of Santa Chiara. Inside, there is an altar in polychrome marble flanked by marble putti. It is the work of a Calabrian school."

The Significance of Santa Chiara

The Chiesa di Santa Chiara is dedicated to Saint Clare of Assisi, a follower of St. Francis and the founder of the Order of Poor Clares. The church's history is intrinsically linked to this order, as it was founded as part of their convent in the late 13th century. The presence of a statuette of Santa Chiara above the portal, likely dating back to this early period, serves as a constant reminder of the church's patron saint and its foundational purpose. Reddit

Saint Clare was known for her devotion to poverty and her contemplative lifestyle. The Poor Clares, or the Order of the Poor Sisters of Saint Clare, continue this tradition, living in enclosed communities dedicated to prayer and spiritual life. While the original convent in Crotone eventually saw its last nuns depart in 1916 due to the dilapidated state of the building, the church itself has been preserved and restored, maintaining its spiritual significance. Reddit

For visitors, understanding the dedication to Santa Chiara adds a deeper dimension to the experience. It connects the physical structure to a profound spiritual legacy of simplicity, devotion, and contemplation, making the visit more than just an architectural appreciation.
