"Wonderful to learn and see history of Mataram Kings, some of whom are buried in the masjid graveyard. We were told not to go into the grave area, not sure why, but people were friendly about it. If you have the energy worthwhile to walk the alleyways around the masjid. Great architecture - traditional Kallang Dutch/local style houses."

"One of the oldest mosques in Yogyakarta and central Java yet one of the most preserved ones. The mosque is located in the southern part of Yogyakarta city (if you consider Kotagede as part of the city). The mosque was established around the 16th century as the royal mosque of the kingdom of Mataram. Even though the kingdom's capital changed a few times, this mosque remains because the Kotagede remains populated and it contains the founder of the kingdom. The main building is actually was made in the 20th century. Renovated by the king of Surakarta, Susuhunan Pakubuwana X. But the gates are still authentic except for the main eastern gate which was renovated in the 80s due to a major earthquake."
