The trek to Valikunja is one of the least frequented trails inside Kudremukh National Park. When looking for alternatives to the crowded Kudremukh Peak Trek, most trekkers end up choosing Kurinjal. But even Kurinjal has its crowds nowadays. Valikunja, however, is still off most people’s radars. On most days, you would have the entire trail for yourself. This seclusion is a very calming experience ...

Reviews Summary

The Kudremukh Peak Trek is a challenging yet incredibly rewarding experience, praised for its stunning natural beauty, lush greenery, and panoramic summit views. While the trek's difficulty and unpredictable fog can be drawbacks for some, the overall consensus is that it's a must-do for nature lovers and adventure seekers. InstagramReddit

"The trek to Kudremukha Peak was tough but totally worth it. The trail was full of greenery, streams, and open grasslands. The view from the top was stunning—wide, clear, and peaceful. You can even spot the “horse face” shape of the mountain if the weather is good.
The last stretch was steep and tiring, so a bit of fitness really helps. We had to take a local guide and start early since only a limited number of people are allowed per day. It took us around 4–5 hours to reach the peak.
Overall, a beautiful and refreshing experience for anyone who enjoys nature and doesn’t mind a bit of a challenge."

"I did a solo trek to Kudremukh Peak during the monsoon, and it turned out to be one of the best travel experiences of my life.

I started the trek at 7.30 AM and reached back to forest check-post around 5 PM.(since we spent more time at peak)

I took a KSRTC bus from Majestic, Bangalore at 9:00 PM and reached Kalasa by 5:00 AM (₹426 one way). While most people go through homestays that arrange guides and transport, I wanted to finish the trek on the same day and return — so I didn’t book anything in advance.

From Kalasa, there's a bus at 6:00 AM that goes directly to the forest checkpost (₹24), but I didn’t wait for that.
Instead, a kind resort uncle at Kalasa helped me get into a jeep that dropped me halfway at Samse (₹100), and from there I walked a bit in the rain before catching an auto (₹100) to the checkpost.

After reaching the checkpost, I submitted the trek permit printout and ticket xerox. The forest staff were very helpful — they added me to a group from Mandya, and from there a guide was arranged for the trek (₹1000 per group).

We had a simple but delicious breakfast (₹55) at a local shop run by an aunty who lives near the checkpost — truly comforting food.
Then we took a shared 4x4 jeep (₹300 per head, since there were 7 of us) to the base camp where the actual trek begins.

The trek is around 22 km (11 km up and 11 km down), and it rained almost the entire time.
There was fog everywhere, and multiple streams flowing along the trail — nature in its purest form. I kept splashing that icy water on my face… it was refreshing beyond words.

Me and a new friend climbed a bit faster and got separated from the rest of the group, but our guide came all the way to the top searching and found us there — surrounded by thick mist and peaceful silence.

After reaching back down, we had hot maggie from Akka’s shop(₹30), changed into dry clothes at the checkpost, and I took the 6:00 PM bus back to Kalasa.
I wandered around a bit, then had a tasty butter masala dosa at Dosa Mane, and caught the 8:50 PM bus back to Bangalore."

"Visited on 10-Auv-2025.
After experiencing almost all the nearby trekking spots, Kudremukha seemed like the most overrated trekking destination❗After trekking for almost 24kms (two way), people usually don't get to see the top view due to complete fog coverage. Also the trekking path is not pleasing to the eyes as compared to other trekking spots. The govt claims its 9+9 kms, but it's actually 12km+12km as per my experience & trekking guides.
Trekking difficulty is hard."

For Different Travelers

Tailored advice for your travel style

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

The Kudremukh Peak Trek is a challenging adventure, and while rewarding, it might be strenuous for very young children. The 22 km round trip and steep ascents require good stamina. If you plan to trek with older children (teenagers), ensure they are physically prepared and have appropriate gear. Reddit

Consider opting for a homestay experience in Mullodi village for a more relaxed stay before or after the trek. This allows families to enjoy the natural beauty without the intensity of the full trek. The surrounding areas offer opportunities for shorter walks and experiencing local village life. Instagram

The Kudremukh National Park Ecosystem

Kudremukh National Park is a biodiversity hotspot within the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park is characterized by its vast expanses of rolling grasslands, interspersed with dense shola forests and evergreen forests. This unique landscape supports a rich variety of flora and fauna, including endangered species. The park plays a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance of the region, acting as a vital watershed for several rivers. Instagram

The trek itself takes you through this diverse ecosystem. You'll encounter numerous streams and small waterfalls, fed by the monsoon rains, which are essential for the park's water cycle. The grasslands are home to various herbivores, while the forests provide shelter for predators and a multitude of bird species. It's important for trekkers to be mindful of their impact on this fragile environment and follow Leave No Trace principles. Reddit

Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect Kudremukh from threats like illegal mining and encroachment. By obtaining permits and trekking responsibly, visitors contribute to the park's preservation. Understanding the ecological significance of Kudremukh enhances the appreciation of its natural beauty and the importance of its conservation. Instagram

Navigating the Trek: Trails and Terrain

The Kudremukh Peak Trek, starting from Mullodi village, is approximately 22 km round trip. The trail is well-defined for the most part, but it presents a varied terrain that can be challenging. You'll traverse through open grasslands, which can be exposed to the sun, and then enter dense forest patches offering welcome shade. InstagramReddit

Expect to cross several streams and small waterfalls along the way. During the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons, these can be quite lively and may require careful navigation. The final ascent to the peak is the most demanding part, involving a steep climb that tests your stamina. Proper trekking shoes with good grip are highly recommended to manage the rocky and sometimes slippery paths. InstagramReddit

While the trails are generally marked, it's crucial to stay with your assigned guide. The weather can change rapidly, with fog often rolling in, which can reduce visibility significantly. Being prepared for varying conditions, including rain and mist, is key to a safe and enjoyable trek. Reddit
