What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Liberty Statue for its iconic status and the absolutely stunning panoramic views of Budapest it offers from Gellért Hill. The historical significance and the opportunity for a rewarding hike are also frequently highlighted as major positives. However, some find the climb challenging, and facilities at the summit can be limited.
"Fisherman’s Bastion is an absolutely charming landmark with plenty to see in one place. The panoramic view over Budapest and the Parliament is breathtaking and truly unmissable. During summer, it’s best to plan a visit before sunset to avoid the intense midday heat and to enjoy the softer evening light.
One downside is the lack of public restrooms. The only available WC is inside a restaurant and costs €1 per use.
Note: visit light and wear comfortable clothing and shoes, as the stairs leading up to the Bastion are long . Visitors with knee or mobility issues may find the climb challenging, so it’s advisable to join a guided tour that includes transport or take a taxi directly to the site."
Hussain Alturki
"Very nice small park in the middle of the city. Walked past it and didn’t regret it. A lot of trees, playgrounds and an overall vibrant atmosphere. You can see some really nice buildings located outside of the park. In addition, you can find a nice picturesque view on the Parliament!"
Fjodor
"Incredible square next to parliament buildings. Don’t miss this if you are visiting Budapest. We were lucky enough to see it on a national holiday when everything was decorated. Beautiful area."

The Symbolism of the Liberty Statue
Originally, the statue was part of a larger Soviet-era monument complex. However, following the fall of communism, the surrounding Soviet symbols were removed, leaving the Liberty Statue to stand as a purely Hungarian emblem of freedom. Its prominent location on Gellért Hill ensures it is visible from many parts of the city, serving as a constant reminder of the country's resilience and aspirations.
Visitors often reflect on the statue's historical context and its enduring message of liberty. The panoramic views from its base further enhance the experience, allowing one to contemplate the city's past and present from a significant vantage point.
Exploring Gellért Hill and the Citadella
The ascent to the summit is an adventure in itself. Various paths wind through wooded areas, offering shaded routes and scenic overlooks. Many visitors choose to hike up, enjoying the exercise and the gradual reveal of the city below. The description of the area as a 'quiet park with walking paths' suggests a tranquil environment conducive to exploration.
Beyond the main attractions, the hill is dotted with smaller monuments and natural springs. The combination of historical sites, natural beauty, and the iconic Liberty Statue makes Gellért Hill a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Budapest.
Capturing the Perfect Shot: Photography Tips
Experiment with different perspectives. While the front view of the statue is classic, try capturing it from the sides, from below looking up, or even from further down the hill to include more of the cityscape. The panoramic views from the summit are equally important; ensure your camera is ready to capture the sprawling beauty of Budapest, including the Danube River, its bridges, and the Parliament Building.
Consider visiting on a weekday morning to minimize crowds and have more freedom to compose your shots. If you're interested in drone photography, be sure to research local regulations beforehand, as drone usage can be restricted in urban areas.
