What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Santo Wines is celebrated for its absolutely stunning caldera views and spectacular sunsets, making it a must-visit for many. Visitors praise the unique volcanic wines and the overall experience of tasting them with such a backdrop. However, some find it quite overpriced, especially for dining, and the busy atmosphere can detract from a more intimate experience.
"Beautiful winery in Santorini with a great selection of wines and some solid food options too. The place gets really crowded, and depending on where you're staying, it can be a bit far—so expect to pay extra for a transfer. Service was good, no complaints there. The main highlight, without a doubt, is the view. The sunset from there is absolutely unreal, one of the most breathtaking I’ve seen.
That said, I found it extremely overpriced—even for Santorini standards. We spent around €300 for two and didn’t leave feeling full. So yeah, it’s worth it for the view, but if you're looking for a full dining experience, there are way better restaurants around the island."

"We did the full tour at Santos Wines, and it was packed with fascinating information about Santorini’s history and wine-making traditions. After the tour, we enjoyed a 6-glass wine tasting while taking in the most breathtaking views—an absolutely perfect setting to drink, relax, and soak in the beauty of the island. Highly recommend the experience!"

"Nice winery with some great tasting wine. I booked the premium wine flight and I enjoyed all of them. The view from the winery is stunning and a great spot for photos and watching the sunset. The staff were very kind and explained each wine to me. The only reason I give 4 stars and not 5 is because this is a very busy winery which can make the indoor part loud and the experience much less personable. There was a storm at the time of my booking so I couldn’t sit outside but it looked like a great spot."

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Focus on a shorter visit, perhaps a casual tasting with some snacks, rather than a full dinner. The novelty of being high up with a vast view might be engaging for kids. However, be mindful that the focus is on wine, and extensive kid-specific activities are not available. Bringing snacks and drinks for children might be a good idea.
💰 Budget Travelers
Transportation is key for budget travelers. Utilize the public bus system as much as possible, even if it means longer travel times or transfers. Alternatively, consider visiting Pyrgos village first, which is often less crowded and more affordable, and then making your way to Santo Wines for a shorter, focused experience.
💖 Couples & Romantic Getaways
Consider a wine tasting that includes a selection of local wines and perhaps a cheese or charcuterie board to share. While dinner can be pricey, the overall experience of sipping wine with such a spectacular backdrop is unforgettable. Many couples choose this location for special occasions like anniversaries or proposals.
🍷 Wine Enthusiasts
Consider booking a more in-depth tasting experience or a tour if available. While Santo Wines is a large cooperative, it represents a significant part of Santorini's wine production. For a broader perspective, you might also consider visiting smaller, boutique wineries like Estate Argyros or Domaine Sigalas for comparison.

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
The Unique Terroir of Santorini Wines
Santo Wines, as a cooperative, plays a crucial role in preserving and promoting these traditional grape varietals and winemaking techniques. They work with local growers to cultivate grapes that are perfectly adapted to the island's challenging environment. This dedication to the land and its unique produce is evident in every glass, offering visitors a true taste of Santorini's volcanic heritage. Experiencing these wines is like tasting the island itself.
Beyond Assyrtiko, Santo Wines also produces Vinsanto, a celebrated sweet dessert wine. Made from sun-dried Assyrtiko and Aidani grapes, Vinsanto is aged for extended periods, developing complex aromas of dried fruit, honey, and nuts. It's a testament to the island's winemaking history and a perfect way to conclude a tasting session.
Navigating Santorini's Transportation for Winery Visits
Taxis offer more flexibility but come at a higher cost. For a popular spot like Santo Wines, a round-trip taxi fare can add up significantly, sometimes reaching 80 EUR or more, depending on your starting point. This expense can be a deterrent for budget-conscious travelers. Some visitors suggest negotiating fares or checking with your hotel for potential shuttle services, which might offer better value.
Renting an ATV or a car is a popular choice for independent exploration, offering the freedom to visit multiple wineries and attractions at your own pace. However, parking can be challenging in popular areas, and navigating the island's narrow, winding roads requires confidence. For those who prefer not to drive, organized wine tours are an excellent alternative, often including transportation and guided tastings at several wineries, including Santo Wines.
The Allure of Sunset Dining at Santo Wines
While the views are universally praised, the dining aspect receives mixed reviews. The food is generally considered good, with options like local sausages and grilled dishes available. However, some guests find the prices to be quite high, even for Santorini standards, and suggest that the culinary experience might not match the exceptional views for the cost. It's often recommended to go for the wine tasting and appetizers to fully appreciate the setting without overspending on a full meal.
To secure the best seats for this iconic sunset, booking in advance is essential. Many visitors aim for tables on the front terrace, which often come with a minimum spend requirement. This ensures you have an unobstructed view of the spectacle. Even if you can't get a front-row seat, the views from other parts of the terrace are still spectacular, offering a memorable Santorini experience.
