🏛 Museum of Prehistoric Thera [2] Here is an overview of what I like to call the treasure of Santorini, before showing it in more detail. Most of the frescoes found in Akrotiri have reached us from 1600 BC in exceptional condition, some of them practically intact. The vividness of the colors is also due to the fact that the pigments used were probably of mineral origin. The technique used is the s...

Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Museum of Prehistoric Thera to be a fascinating and worthwhile stop, particularly for its well-preserved frescoes and artifacts from Akrotiri. It's praised as a cool, indoor escape from the Santorini sun and an excellent way to gain context for the island's ancient history. While not a vast museum, its quality and the insights it provides are highly valued.

"Very good. Being indoors was a bonus so you're not in the sun!

Found out afterwards that you can buy a ticket which includes the museum in Fira but the cost isn't too much when buying separately.

Staff were very friendly.

Unfortunately when we visited we were not able to walk between the ruins due to the earthquakes earlier in the year and the possibility of more but still an amazing visit."

"Fascinating museum that we went to the day after going to Akrotiri and so so saw the artifacts and wall paintings that were found at that site and referred to in the information boards around the site. Beautiful things, their homes must have been stunning - or at least those of the better off. The museum shows them off really well. Not huge - took us around an hour - but well worth seeing. Puts the site in context."

Anna Hubbard

"It was very interesting. The best part was seeing how modern day Santorini is influenced by prehistoric designs. Lots of information and takes around 1.5 hours to get through. Was €10 in April 2025 and the value was good for what we saw and experienced. Would definitely recommend to learn about history of island."
