What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the LVR Open-Air Museum Kommern, calling it one of Europe's best and a must-see for its immersive, time-traveling experience. The well-preserved historic buildings and beautiful forest paths are consistently praised. However, some note poor signage and challenging cobblestoned paths, making it difficult for those with mobility issues.
"I have been driving around Europe for 14 weeks so far, 8 different countries, many different attractions and this place is up there with the best. So well set up, it's like going back in time.
Much bigger than I expected with beautiful paths thru the forest to each section.
I LOVED it so much, can't recommend high enough, not to be missed"

"Nice food at the restaurant! And super cool old houses. I do recommend bringing snacks and drinks. There will be A LOT of walking. We had to take a nap at a bench."

"Interesting open-air museum to learn about the different architectural styles in the region. Many of the old buildings were moved from other villages to this location or recreated. They are well-preserved and contain original furniture and objects with specific themes. You can also find some farm animals, but children cannot touch them (kein Streichelzoo). The signage to get there is quite poor. You also need to walk up a hill from the parking lot to the entrance, which is difficult if you have a cart or stroller. Forget about going in if someone is in a wheelchair. Most of the paths are covered with cobblestones (Kopfsteinpflaster), making it quite difficult and uncomfortable to walk. The park area is absurdly large, and you cannot visit all the points in just one day if you are with small children or people in a wheelchair. The restaurant offers good food options, and the staff is friendly."

While the animals are a draw, remember they are for viewing, not petting. The sheer size of the museum means you might want to prioritize certain areas or plan for breaks to avoid overtiring little ones.

The museum's vastness means you get a lot of 'bang for your buck' in terms of exploration and discovery. Navigating the Vast Landscape
This scale presents both opportunities and challenges. While it allows for a more immersive and less crowded experience in many areas, it also means that comfortable footwear is absolutely essential. Visitors with strollers or mobility aids may find the cobblestoned paths and uphill sections challenging. Planning your route and taking frequent breaks on the numerous benches scattered throughout the park is highly recommended to make the most of your visit.
Family Fun and Practicalities
However, parents should be prepared for the extensive walking required. While children often enjoy the novelty, the sheer size of the museum might necessitate frequent rests. It's also worth noting that while there are animals, they are not a petting zoo, so direct interaction is limited. Bringing snacks and drinks is a practical tip that can help keep energy levels up and make the day more enjoyable for everyone.
