What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are overwhelmingly impressed by the sheer scale and intricate Gothic beauty of Cologne Cathedral, calling it an absolute masterpiece and a must-visit. The free entry is a major plus, though the tower climb, while physically demanding, offers unparalleled views and is highly recommended. Some note the surrounding area is less appealing, but the cathedral itself is universally praised.
"While the city around the cathedral is less than desirable, you do not want to pass up any opportunity you have to see this amazing cathedral in person. I was simply in awe the entire time. 512 feet of beauty. Entrance to the cathedral is free, but donations are always appreciated. The temple to the three kings is inside, ample seating. Straight back is a stained glass window that depicts stories from the Bible as is known as the Bible window and said to be the oldest of its kind still surviving today. Do not pass up this cathedral!"

"Absolutely stunning. The inside is free to enter. It’s a church so be quiet and respectful. We got to hear a live performance of the piano and organs which was beautiful. Walk the tower for €6. The steps are 533 up and back down. It’s physical and small space with some inlets to stop to rest but worth it. I’m terrified of heights but did it. They are down the steps to the side of the cathedral near the paid toilets. You can use credit cards or cash for both the tour and toilet."

"The Cologne Cathedral is an absolute masterpiece and a must visit in Cologne. It was definitely the highlight of my day trip to the city. The Gothic architecture is breathtaking and the intricate details in every corner are truly worth admiring.
I visited on a weekend, so it was lively and bustling with tourists from all over the world. Entry is free, and the cathedral welcomes everyone, no matter what your religion is.
If you’re lucky, you’ll stumble upon street performances right in front of the cathedral. They fill the square with music, dances, and laughter. You can even join in!"

The Epic Construction of Cologne Cathedral
This incredible feat of engineering involved meticulous planning and execution. The cathedral's design follows the High Gothic style, characterized by its soaring height, pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and flying buttresses. The twin spires, which were the tallest in the world at the time of completion, are a defining feature of its silhouette. The sheer scale of the project required immense resources, skilled labor, and a deep commitment from generations of architects, stonemasons, and craftsmen. The cathedral's completion was a major cultural and architectural event in 19th-century Germany.
Today, the Cologne Cathedral construction history is a fascinating aspect for visitors. It highlights the perseverance and vision required to create such a monumental structure. The fact that it was built over such a vast period, with long breaks, makes its eventual completion even more remarkable. It stands as a symbol of faith, endurance, and architectural brilliance, a true wonder of the medieval and modern eras.
