What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Wadi El Rayan is praised for its unique natural beauty, featuring Egypt's only waterfalls and serene desert lakes. Visitors enjoy activities like sandboarding and hiking, appreciating the tranquil escape from Cairo. However, some find the waterfalls less dramatic than expected and facilities basic.
"Wadi El Rayan in Fayoum, Egypt, is a serene natural reserve known for its stunning waterfalls, expansive lakes, and unique desert-meets-oasis landscape. The cascading waterfalls, a rare sight in Egypt, create a tranquil atmosphere, perfect for relaxation and photography. The calm lakes offer opportunities for boat rides, enhancing the experience of this breathtaking site."

"Visited 13 October 2022.
Located about 60 km south west of the city Fayoum the waterfalls are part of the Wadi El Rayan protectorate.
After our night camp at Magic Lake and a cooked breakfast we made our way to the only waterfall in Egypt.
The waterfalls are actually the connecting point between the upper Wadi Rayan lake and the lower lake and there are four distinct falls.
I'm unsure if the volume of water over the falls changes depending on the season but it was a moderate flow not gushing. While it was a nice display it was a little underwhelming.
There is a cafe and a market style stall area but due to our early morning arrival the only thing open was the cafe. We were the only visitors there at the time so we did have the waterfalls to ourselves."

"Nestled in the western desert about two hours southwest of Cairo lies one of Egypt's hidden gems - the Wadi El Rayan waterfalls. As part of Wadi El Rayan Protected Area, these stunning waterfalls are an oasis of greenery and flowing water in an otherwise arid landscape.
The falls themselves tumble down two levels into a large pool, the biggest waterfall reaching about 15 meters high. The contrast between the desert cliffs and palm trees surrounding the falls makes for spectacular scenery. The pools at the base are an inviting turquoise blue, perfect for taking a dip on a hot day.
Getting to the waterfalls requires a bit of effort - be prepared for a bumpy ride down an unpaved road. But the remoteness adds to the serenity of this desert oasis. Once there, you'll find basic facilities available like bathrooms, picnic tables and barbecue pits for cooking up a meal.
The best time to visit is in the cooler months between October and April, when you might even get lucky enough to have the place to yourself. From May to September, temperatures can reach dangerous levels in the desert.
Overall, the Wadi El Rayan waterfalls make for an off-the-beaten-path destination for nature lovers and waterfall chasers visiting Egypt. The lush desert scenery juxtaposed against the arid backdrop is striking. A dip in the crisp pools will cool you right down. Just be ready for a bit of a desert adventure accessing this secluded spot. But it's worth the effort for a uniquely Egyptian oasis."
