Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Asasif Tombs to be a worthwhile addition to a Luxor itinerary, offering well-preserved and colorful details, often with fewer crowds than more famous sites. While not always considered 'essential' compared to the Valley of the Kings, the unique artistry and glimpse into daily life make them appealing. Some travelers note potential issues with extra ticket costs and unsolicited 'tip' requests from guardians. Reddit

"Went there today. After the valley of kings and the valley of queens, it’s ok but not essential. Plus alert scam, at the entrance someone will want to take you to the tombs, saying it’s difficult to find the tombs whereas there are signs and then some of the tombs are closed and you need the guardian of the tomb to open it so he obviously expect a tip. And then even if the tomb is opened, the guardian will try to explain stuff to you, so tips again 😅😩"

Ludovic DAMPROBE

"Not as glorious as the valley of the kings but worth visiting if you have time as some of the detail in the tombs is very well preserved . The tombs have much smaller entrances and if you have trouble doing down narrow stairs or smaller areas then you may struggle here. It was absolutely empty while I was here which made it enjoyable but it’s how small they are tombs would be very cramped with more than a few people.

Some of the rooms tombs are super colourful which was a real surprise and detail was amazing much more then some of the Valley of the Kings tombs."

"Less touristical than the Valley of the Kings and the Queens, there are many nice tombs in the Valley of the Nobles.
Some are interesting. I have visited 2 of them : Ramone and Userthat TT51. They have well-conserved murals, and you can discover the daily life of Ancient Egypt in visiting them.
I had a private guide, so no problem with tickets, guards, and so called guides on the spot."

The Significance of the Asasif Tombs

The Asasif Tombs, located in the Theban Necropolis, are a collection of sepulchers belonging to high-ranking officials, nobles, and priests from the New Kingdom period. Unlike the royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings, these tombs were designed to house the elite, offering a unique perspective into the lives and beliefs of ancient Egypt's influential figures. The detailed artwork within these tombs serves as invaluable historical records, depicting scenes of daily life, religious rituals, and the deceased's journey to the afterlife. Reddit

Many of these tombs are celebrated for their exceptional preservation and vibrant colors. The Tomb of Sennefer (TT96), famously known as the 'Tomb of the Vineyards,' is a prime example, featuring a breathtaking ceiling adorned with intricate depictions of grapevines. Other notable tombs, such as those of Menna and Nakht (TT69 and TT52), provide vivid insights into agricultural practices, banquets, and funerary ceremonies. Exploring these tombs offers a more intimate and less crowded experience than the more famous royal necropolises, allowing for a deeper appreciation of ancient Egyptian artistry and culture. Navigating the Asasif Experience

Visiting the Asasif Tombs requires a bit of preparation to ensure a smooth experience. While the general area might be accessible with a standard West Bank ticket, some of the most spectacular tombs, like the Tomb of Sennefer, often require an additional fee. This extra cost is frequently highlighted by visitors as being well worth it for the visual splendor. TikTok+1

Be prepared for the possibility of encountering tomb guardians who may offer to open closed tombs or provide explanations for a tip. While this can enhance your visit, it's also a common point of caution for travelers, with some suggesting that a private guide can help navigate these interactions more effectively. Reddit The tombs themselves can be quite small with narrow entrances and stairs, so visitors with mobility concerns should be mindful of this. Reddit Despite these considerations, the relative lack of crowds compared to more famous sites makes Asasif a rewarding destination for those seeking a more personal encounter with ancient Egyptian history.
