Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Horizontes Experimental Forest Station for its significant conservation story and the opportunity to witness a recovering tropical dry forest. The chance to see wildlife, including rare tapirs and diverse bird species, is a major highlight. However, the rustic accommodations and challenging road access are noted drawbacks for some.

"This is part of the Área de Conservación Guanacaste (ACG) World Heritage site and one of the most amazing stories of conservation I've ever heard. This place has trails that go through Tropical Dry Forest, lots a flora and fauna to see (during the day we saw mostly birds and deer, but once I actually managed to see a tapir, not enough for a good photo but I tried!). During Dry Season the also have bike trails and star gazing activities and during rainy season they have some cool paths and you can see the waterfall (they rent our rubber boots-it was really fun). It gets hot, so you might want to avoid walking around at noon. It's really close to a tourism hub and saved me lots of time as I didn't have to go all the way into Liberia. It's also really nice to know that the entrance fee I payed goes to support the conservation of all these species. Simple dorm lodging available. --- Oh, they have monthly tours to check out camera traps with Guanacaste Wildlife Monitoring, and it's just really amazing to see all the species that are captured on film while walking around at night (you can check their Instagram account)."

"This forestry station is very interesting. The Costa Rican gov't. has converted old grazing land into a vibrant se ondary dry forest. There's lodging available for visiting researchers. There are nice walking trails, including a Level 1 arboretum."

Harvey Trop

"Not the usual tourist spot. No one from the public was there on a Saturday. Staff super friendly. We did the Los Coyotes trail and saw a Baird’s Tapir. Lots of great bird sightings, too."
