Reviews Summary

Visitors often find the Museo de Guanacaste to be a unique historical site, particularly appreciating the chance to explore its former prison cells and learn about local history and art. While some note it's not a traditional museum and hours can be inconsistent, the building's past and the support for local artists are frequently highlighted as positive aspects.

"This is a free museum and was very interesting! It’s not so much of a museum as it is a historic building, the man at the front was very nice, he spoke no English but somehow managed to give us quite a bit of information about the place. We were able to walk around the old prison cells and there were 2 rooms with more general information about Costa Rican life/history- those rooms had English and Spanish info cards. This was a great way to learn a bit about the culture/history. You will probably not spend more than an hour there."

Tamara Moroz

"Free entry. The building was a prison and one can walk through the former prison cells below ground. The exhibit was about the sabaneros-- small but detailed."

Jett Plane

"This was a very unique experience. The man there was very informative, even though he knew very little English. The history he was able to tell us was amazing and how it had been a prison. Walking through and seeing the artifacts were exceptional and they’ve been cared for so well. The prison block cells were very creepy, but cool in their own right."
