What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Reviews for the Road Town Ferry Terminal are mixed, with many travelers citing disorganization, unexpected fees, and unfriendly staff, particularly for USVI routes. However, others find the ferries to BVI islands to be air-conditioned, comfortable, and reasonably timely. Improvements are noted, but preparation for potential hassles is advised.
"If you enjoy long lines, total disorganization, your checked luggage lurking on the street, extra fees that could've just been included in the ticket price, delays, and frustration to begin your trip to BVI then this is the ferry for you. Based on the customer service you would think they don't want tourism here at all."
Jim Helmink
"The best way to visit the neighboring islands. The ferries to additional BVI islands are air conditioned with free wifi, comfortable and approx $60USD round trip. The ferry to the USVI is another issue. They are of a less quality. Open air and tight seating. There is also a departure tax of $20USD when travelling from the BVI to USVI and another departure tax when travelling back to the BVi from USVI."
Terry Mohammed
"Incredibly disorganized, unfriendly staff, incoherent process, and several surprise, cash-only fees.
Prepare for the bag guy to remind you 5 times that you'll need to take care of him for doing his job, while someone from the upstairs restaurant incessantly tries to get you upstairs to eat. The restaurant solicitor interrupted us at least five times - we told him to leave us alone after the first few but he kept trying.
The staff at Road Town Fast Ferry couldn't have been less helpful. They don't communicate what is needed and get visibly annoyed if you don't already know. And don't bother asking to borrow a pen after getting your customs form, they have zero.
In addition to the $100 ferry ticket, you'll be surprised with a $10 passenger fee and $5 per bag...and of course the cash to tip the bag guy.
The guys on the boat during the ride were remarkably rude and unhelpful. They yelled at everyone for standing up as we docked - of course, he hadn't informed anyone of this prior. There were about 60 people on the boat and you could cut the tension with a knife after he yelled at everyone.
All in all, it feels like a corrupt business staffed with unhelpful and unfriendly people who only communicate when it's time to get money from you. Welcome to your vacation."

Navigating the Ferry Experience
For travel to other BVI islands, ferries are generally well-equipped with air conditioning and WiFi, offering a comfortable journey. However, routes to the U.S. Virgin Islands can involve open-air boats with tighter seating and additional departure taxes. It's highly recommended to arrive well in advance of your scheduled departure, particularly for USVI routes, to navigate the ticketing, security, and boarding procedures.
Despite the challenges, the ferry terminal is a vital link, and with proper preparation, travelers can successfully reach their destinations. The proximity to shops and restaurants also offers convenient amenities for those waiting for their ferry.
Understanding Ferry Routes and Vessels
Travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands (St. Thomas, St. John) is also a significant function of the terminal. These routes often utilize different ferry operators and may involve vessels that are less luxurious, sometimes being open-air. A notable difference is the imposition of departure taxes when traveling between the BVI and USVI, which can add significantly to the overall cost.
When planning your trip, it's essential to research the specific ferry operator for your chosen route, as vessel quality and onboard amenities can vary. Checking schedules and understanding the fare structure, including any additional taxes or fees, will help ensure a smoother travel experience.
