What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors appreciate the opportunity to find unique, island-made goods and local souvenirs, often praising the friendly and helpful shopkeepers. However, some reviews suggest a need for more authentic local products and improved customer service to enhance the overall atmosphere and visitor experience.
"There's a lot to see by just walking a few minutes inland, so don't just stay on the wharf!
While there are several good shopping choices on the pier for the start or end of your tour (look around the outside stores for sunscreen and pharmacy), veer a little further left and walk a minute more to this excellent group of nearby shops for a great selection of crafts and uncommon finds.
(Gracious thanks to the Tortola Police for doing a good job of keeping us from getting mobbed by hustlers and taxi tours.)"
Emm Caisse
"There is much that could be done to improve this place. Starting with a focus on selling more authentic local products such as bazz's smoothies. Most of the other stalls all seem to be selling the same cheap clothing that you can find for better prices elsewhere. Another suggestion I would make is to always have a local band playing to help set a welcoming mood, most days it looks and feels pretty dull. I would also give the shop keepers a course in customer service, to better make the customers feel like spending their money."

🚇 🗺️ Getting There
Access varies by location. For Abuja, it's a must-visit spot if you're in the city. For B.V.I., it's often a stop on island tours. Research specific transport options for the village you plan to visit.
This depends on the specific village. Some may have local bus routes, while others are best reached by taxi or as part of an organized tour.
Within larger villages like Shilparamam, walking is the primary mode. For smaller craft markets, taxis or ride-sharing services might be necessary.
Parking availability can vary greatly. It's advisable to check in advance or rely on tour operators if driving yourself is not convenient.
Larger, well-known craft villages are usually well-signposted. For less prominent ones, asking locals or using GPS is recommended.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
Entry fees vary. Some craft villages, like Shilparamam, may have a nominal entry fee, while others are open markets. It's best to check the specific location's policy beforehand.
Hours can differ significantly. Many craft markets operate during daylight hours, often closing in the early evening. Check local listings for precise times.
Discounts are not commonly advertised for open craft markets. However, inquire about group rates if you are visiting with a larger party.
For open-air craft villages, advance booking is usually not required. If there's a specific exhibition or festival, check for ticketing options.
Visiting on weekdays, especially in the morning, generally offers a less crowded experience.
🎫 🛍️ Shopping & Crafts
You can find a wide array of items, including traditional textiles like Adinkra cloth, handmade jewelry, pottery, paintings, spices, teas, and unique souvenirs.
Authenticity varies. It's recommended to look for stalls showcasing unique, locally made items rather than mass-produced goods. Engaging with vendors can help identify genuine crafts.
