What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the absolutely stunning, unparalleled views of mountains meeting the sea, calling the pass a beautiful and free experience. While the winding roads are noted, the main drawback for some is the persistent sales pitches from local vendors at the summit, though the scenery and overall vibe are highly praised.
"Great spot with stunning views on both sides of the pass — mountains on one side, coastline on the other. At the top, there’s a small selection of cafés and shops where you can grab a drink or pick up some souvenirs. It’s worth stopping for a few photos and soaking in the scenery. Around 30 minutes here is plenty to enjoy the atmosphere before heading on."

"Absolutely stunning views like no other, be prepared the trip up and down is very curvy. Like VERY curvy and winding. Also be prepared to get up there and be bugged by all the locals trying to get you into their shop and no one else’s. I understand they gotta make a living but I wish they would ease off just a tad bit. Tourist will come to your shop cause it’s there just openly welcome and greet them with a smile and they’ll come, Not pressure. But other than that everything is great vibes."

The Hai Van Pass Journey: More Than Just a Gate
Traffic on the pass is generally light, as most heavy vehicles opt for the Hai Van Tunnel. This makes it a relatively safe and enjoyable ride for experienced motorcyclists. However, the roads are undeniably curvy and winding, demanding attention and careful maneuvering, especially in misty conditions. The pass connects the cities of Da Nang and Hue, making it a popular segment for those traveling between these two destinations. Some companies even offer one-way motorbike rentals with luggage transport, simplifying logistics for travelers.
Beyond the thrill of the ride, the Hai Van Pass is steeped in history. The Hai Van Gate itself is a remnant of a 13th-century citadel, a testament to its strategic importance. While not much of the original fort remains, the gate stands as a historical marker amidst the stunning natural beauty. Visiting early in the morning can reward you with spectacular sunrise views, where the sky and sea appear to merge into a single, serene blue expanse. The combination of historical significance, natural beauty, and the exhilarating drive makes the Hai Van Pass a must-do for many visitors to central Vietnam.
Navigating the Pass: Motorbike vs. Car vs. Train
Cars offer a more comfortable and sheltered experience, ideal for families or those less keen on motorbikes. You can hire a private car with a driver for a day trip. This option provides flexibility to stop at viewpoints and attractions along the way. Alternatively, for a truly unique and scenic journey, consider the Heritage Train that runs between Da Nang and Hue. This vintage-style train offers comfortable seating, live music, and stunning coastal views as it winds through the mountains, providing a relaxing way to appreciate the Hai Van Pass scenery without the need to drive.
Regardless of your chosen mode of transport, remember that the Hai Van Pass is more than just a route; it's an experience. The dramatic elevation changes, the sweeping ocean panoramas, and the historical significance of the gate all contribute to its allure. Planning your trip during daylight hours is essential for safety and to fully appreciate the visual splendor of this iconic Vietnamese landmark.
