Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the unique experience of seeing a community live on the water, highlighting the stunning natural beauty of Ha Long Bay. While some note the increasing reliance on tourism and the relocation of some residents, the overall sentiment is one of awe and appreciation for this distinctive way of life. The opportunity for kayaking and exploring the serene environment is a major draw.

"This tour was included as part of the cruise trip. You can either choose to do kayaking or go in a bamboo boat. I chose the second option, and we had to wait as there were many groups of people and not enough boats.

The boat was handled by an old lady who lives in one of the floating houses. It was super interesting to see, and we actually passed by her house.

There are very few houses left here, as the majority were moved.

Once we reached the village, we got to see their techniques and also how they grow the pearls."

"Visited the Vung Vieng Fishing Village by bamboo boat while on cruise in Bai Tu Long Bay. Very relaxing trip through this unusual floating village. Beautiful scenery around the bay. There is also a stop to hear about oyster farming and see pearls for sale."

Michael Case

"Sea kayaking through this tiny floating fishing village is truly special. The village only have less than 20 floating houses. 2014 was relocated to mainland by government, but they can’t make living in the city some of them move back to the water. There is eve a cute restaurant with food and painting to sale. The entire village was protected by the islands around them. Makes it idea to live. The water is calm even in the typhoon season."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Unique Architecture of Floating Villages

The floating houses of Cua Van are a marvel of engineering and adaptation. Built on rafts or pontoons, these structures are designed to withstand the tides and weather of Ha Long Bay. Each house is essentially a self-contained unit, serving as a home, a place of business, or even a school. The materials used are often wood and bamboo, with roofs made from corrugated iron or thatch. This unique architecture is a direct response to the environment, allowing communities to thrive on the water for centuries. InstagramReddit

Life on the water dictates a different rhythm. Residents navigate their village by small boats or kayaks, and daily chores are adapted to the aquatic setting. While many villages have seen residents move to the mainland due to government initiatives aimed at improving living standards, places like Cua Van still offer a glimpse into this traditional way of life. The community structure is strong, with shared responsibilities and a deep connection to the sea. Instagram+1

Visiting Cua Van provides an opportunity to witness this architectural ingenuity firsthand. It’s a stark contrast to land-based living and offers a profound appreciation for human resilience and the ability to create a home in seemingly challenging environments. The visual impact of hundreds of these structures clustered together is truly unforgettable. Instagram

Community and Livelihoods

Historically, the livelihood of Cua Van residents was almost entirely dependent on fishing. Generations of families have honed their skills in navigating the bay and harvesting its bounty. The village itself was structured around this industry, with communal areas for boat repair, net mending, and selling catches. This close-knit community relied on cooperation for survival and prosperity. Instagram+1

In recent years, the economic landscape has shifted. With declining fish stocks and government efforts to relocate communities to more stable land-based housing, the traditional fishing economy has faced challenges. Tourism has become an increasingly important source of income for many. Visitors can now support the community by purchasing local handicrafts or enjoying meals prepared with freshly caught seafood. InstagramReddit

It's important to approach the village with an understanding of this evolution. While the charm of a traditional fishing village remains, it's now intertwined with the realities of modern tourism. This transition allows for the preservation of cultural heritage while providing economic opportunities for the remaining residents. Instagram
