"Bruce was an incredible tour guide who took his time answering questions and sharing all that he knew about Zoar village. The village was beautiful! The area is not stroller friendly but everyone was kind and welcoming to a young toddler. I thought the rate of $12 for a tour was well worth the information we learned and time spent. We would love to visit again!"

Rachel Huntley

"Drove from Cleveland to visit Fort Lauren's Historical Site nearby and had to check this Historical Zoar Village out. It was mid afternoon on a Sunday so not much was open so I will return to visit on a Saturday. Did walk thru the large community garden in the center of the Village. Beautiful manicured flower beds and the many butterflies seemed to appreciate the many flowers."

LJ

"Born and raised in Ohio and my first time here was as a senior. Sorry it took me so long but then again might not have appreciated it as much when I was younger.
Love the history behind Zoar Village, a true communal religious community that survived for ~80 years. Many original buildings remain, some as part of the historic site and some as private residences. The tour is definitely worth the $12 - tour guide was friendly, knowledgeable and very patient with people’s questions. The garden layout remains the same as when first planned although the center tree has been replaced.
Would recommend walking around the village too, see the homes that aren’t part of the tour.
As an aside, would love to see the inn restored and open to the public."

The Zoarites: A Communal Experiment

Zoar Village was founded in 1817 by a group of German Separatists, known as the "Zoarites," who sought religious freedom and a communal way of life. They established a utopian society where property was held in common, and resources were shared among the members. This communal structure allowed them to thrive economically and socially for nearly 80 years. InstagramReddit

Their unique lifestyle involved speaking German, dressing alike, and living off the land, much like the Amish. The village was meticulously planned, with a central communal garden that still exists today, reflecting their organized approach to life. The success of Zoar was a testament to their strong community bonds and shared vision. Instagram

The commune eventually dissolved in the late 1890s due to a combination of factors, including the introduction of electricity and automobiles, changing social norms, and the desire for individual ownership. Despite the dissolution of the commune, the village survived, with many of its original buildings remaining as a testament to its rich history. Reddit+1
