Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the breathtaking ocean views from the overlook and the educational experience at the visitor center, which is also a prime spot for whale watching. The accessible trails, especially the Giant Spruce, and the dramatic coastal features like Thor's Well are highly praised. Some reviewers noted slow service at the gift shop.

"While driving along the beautiful Oregon coast, this spot was a perfect place to take a break. There are plenty of trail options, easy access to the shoreline, and it’s a great idea to stop here first to gather information before exploring further. Inside, there are exhibits showcasing native trees and plants, along with telescopes that make it easy to take in the surrounding views. There’s also a small gift shop, and I’d highly recommend this place to anyone traveling with kids.
It’s both educational and scenic—the views from the observation deck are stunning, and there are well-designed indoor and outdoor areas for enjoying the landscape."

"Amazing views, giant bay windows to whale watch, 26 miles of trails from easy to difficult. Never a dull moment up here!

If you have the National Parks “America the beautiful” pass put it in your dashboard signature side up and save yourself a trip back to your car.

Volunteer Staff are really nice and very helpful with information. 😊"

"Heads up, rookies!

You can get the National Park interagency past here, which I had an ink you might be the case but was an awesome surprise!

There are a few super cool trails within a few hundred feet and/or within a quarter mile from here that I highly recommend also, and I included pictures of those which you can check out with the reviews right before this review to see which ones specifically the pictures are of.

Note: The gal behind the counter needs to pick up the pace a little bit, though - watching her check the person out ahead of me (who bought a bunch of junk) was like putting an audiobook on .25 x speed.- couldn't have been more unnecessarily methodical or sloth like - pick up the pace lady, especially if there is a line forming.

Only Jesus was perfect, though, and I shouldn't judge, but sometimes you got to turn the money tables over to wake people up and reflect a little."

The Majesty of the Giant Spruce

The Giant Spruce Trail at Cape Perpetua is a pilgrimage for nature lovers. This relatively short and easy trail is a gateway to one of the most impressive trees on the Oregon Coast: a colossal Sitka spruce. Standing at an estimated 500 years old, this ancient giant reaches heights of around 200 feet with a trunk diameter of about 5 feet. Instagram Its presence is truly humbling, and walking beneath its massive branches feels like stepping back in time. Instagram

This trail is a testament to the importance of preserving these ancient forests. It offers a tangible connection to the past and a reminder of the natural wonders that still exist. The Giant Spruce is more than just a tree; it's a symbol of resilience and the breathtaking beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Instagram

Understanding Thor's Well and Coastal Phenomena

Thor's Well is one of Cape Perpetua's most dramatic natural attractions, a gaping sinkhole in the coastal rock that appears to 'swallow' the ocean. This phenomenon is most impressive during high tide, when powerful waves surge into the well, creating a spectacular display of water and spray. It's a photographer's dream, offering dynamic and often unpredictable shots. TikTok

Adjacent to Thor's Well are other fascinating coastal features like Devil's Churn and Spouting Horn. Devil's Churn is a narrow inlet where waves are forced into a confined space, creating powerful surges and spray. Spouting Horn, when conditions are right, can shoot water high into the air through a blowhole. These features are best viewed during periods of active surf, making them particularly captivating during stormy weather. Reddit

It's crucial to exercise caution when exploring these areas. The rocks can be slippery, and rogue waves are a real danger. Always maintain a safe distance from the water's edge, especially during high tide. The visitor center staff can provide valuable insights into the best times to view these phenomena and advise on safety precautions. Reddit
