Our first visit to Duck Lake State Park in Muskegon, Michigan 🦆 day Use only, no camping 🏕 but it had the best of both worlds.. a shallow inland lake + a Great Lake - she loved playing under the bridge & having warmer water to swim in 💦 also featured a nice little dune to run up and get a better view 👌🏻 we will definitely revisit this one ! 🐟 . . #muskegon #ducklakestatepark #lakemichigan #westmic...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Duck Lake State Park for its dual lake access, offering both a warm, shallow inland lake ideal for families and a beautiful Lake Michigan beach. The large sand dune and scenic trails are also highlights, making it a versatile spot for a day trip. Some find the trail markings unclear and the kayak channel portage challenging.

"This park is as close to perfect as you can get. One side is Duck Lake - a small shallow lake with a posted extreme drop off about 200 ft offshore, we bring out tubes and float around on the lake. Go under the bridge and follow the channel to Lake Michigan a spectacular beach with soft sand. We also enjoy the picnic area. When my daughter was 2 our hike it Baby group planted a tree with help from the park staff and below the tree is a time capsule with lots of 2 year old treasures inside. If memory served my daughter placed baby elmo in the capsule."

Andrea Vance

"Great place to spend a day kayaking. However, you cannot go from Duck Lake via the channel into Lake Michigan easily. There is a concert barrier in the middle where you have to get out of the kayak to get over the hump. It is very rocky and slippery. I cut my leg and scraped my foot. You really need water shoes to navigate."

Amy Hartig

"We had a great time we didn't park in there but on the side of the Rd it was closer to where we wanted to be tons of ppl in the park were unloading kayaks and having a great time"

The Dual Lake Experience

Duck Lake State Park is unique for offering access to both a warm, shallow inland lake and the vast, cooler Lake Michigan. Duck Lake is perfect for families with young children, offering calmer waters for swimming and floating. Many visitors bring tubes to enjoy the gentle currents. Instagram+1

Lake Michigan provides a more traditional Great Lakes beach experience with its expansive sandy shoreline. The water is cooler and can be more invigorating. The transition between the two lakes via a channel is a notable feature, though it requires a portage for kayaks and can be rocky underfoot, making water shoes essential. InstagramReddit

This duality allows visitors to tailor their experience, choosing the water body that best suits their preferences for the day, whether it's a relaxed float on Duck Lake or a refreshing dip in Lake Michigan.

Navigating the Trails and Dunes

The park boasts several hiking trails that meander through its natural landscapes, including forested areas and open meadows. These trails offer a peaceful escape and a chance to connect with nature. While generally well-maintained, some visitors have noted that trail markers can be unclear at intersections, making a map or GPS device advisable for longer hikes. Reddit

The park's large sand dune is a prominent feature, offering a fun challenge to climb and rewarding visitors with impressive views. It's a popular spot for both children and adults to explore. For those venturing out on the trails, especially during hunting seasons, wearing orange is recommended for safety. InstagramReddit

Whether you're looking for a leisurely stroll or a more adventurous hike, the trails and the iconic dune at Duck Lake State Park provide diverse opportunities for exploration and scenic enjoyment.

Kayaking and Water Access

Kayaking is a popular activity at Duck Lake State Park, with opportunities to explore both Duck Lake and the channel leading to Lake Michigan. Launching from the calmer waters of Duck Lake is generally easy. Reddit

The main challenge for kayakers is navigating the channel to Lake Michigan. There's a barrier that requires you to get out of your kayak and carry it over the hump. This section is described as very rocky and slippery, leading to injuries for some visitors. Therefore, water shoes are strongly recommended to protect your feet and provide better grip. Reddit

Despite the portage, many visitors find the experience rewarding, enjoying the unique journey from the inland lake to the vastness of Lake Michigan. Planning for this portage and wearing appropriate footwear will significantly enhance your kayaking adventure.
