Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Fort Ticonderoga for its extensive historical significance, engaging living history demonstrations, and beautiful King's Garden. Many appreciate the value of the two-day admission and the opportunity to witness reenactments. However, some note that accessibility can be a challenge in certain historic areas, and the lack of shade requires preparation for sunny days.

"I really wanted to enjoy this place more, as there are a lot of things to see and do. But I'm restricted by my power wheelchair from going to a lot of interesting parts of the old fort. Still, I enjoyed the view, the nice gift shop, and the pleasant people always willing to help. During my visit on July 30, some reconstruction efforts were underway on a Fort wall. This is a great place for families with school-age children. But even this 73-year-old is impressed at the history here! George Washington, Ethan Allen, Benedict Arnold...!"

"This visit was a nostalgic moment. I had come here in 1975 This 2025 visit was an opportunity to see the changes and improvements made to the exhibits. It was fantastic! You must make time to see the King’s Garden. The tour guide was very knowledgeable. I really enjoyed my time here."

David Bishop

"My husband and I came for an afternoon when on vacation and we had a lot of fun. The views are absolutely stunning. There’s lots of setting around the fort for those with mobility issues (like myself). It is a good amount of walking so be prepared! Also have sunscreen ready! There’s not much shade available.
There’s lots of tours that you can join or skip and several reenactments of cannons and musket firings.
By the time we got to Kings Garden I was exhausted and didn’t get to explore as much as I’d like but it was gorgeous. We didn’t make it to the corn maze though it looked fun!
Admission is $30 and includes the gardens, the fort and admission to a mountain as well (forget the name). It’s also good for two days entrance! Definitely a good value!
The gift shop was also very cute and had some good items and the on site lunch place was great!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Strategic Importance of Fort Ticonderoga

Fort Ticonderoga, originally built by the French as Fort Carillon in 1755, held immense strategic value during the 18th century. Its location at the southern end of Lake Champlain provided control over the vital waterway connecting Lake George to the St. Lawrence River. This made it a crucial stronghold during both the French and Indian War and the American Revolutionary War. The fort's star-shaped design, a common military fortification of the era, was intended to provide overlapping fields of fire and strong defensive positions. TikTokInstagram+1

During the French and Indian War, the British attempted to capture Fort Carillon but suffered a significant defeat in the Battle of Carillon in 1758. The fort eventually fell to the British in 1759. Its significance continued into the American Revolution when, in 1775, Ethan Allen, Benedict Arnold, and the Green Mountain Boys famously captured the fort by surprise, marking a crucial early victory for the Continental Army. The fort later changed hands again and was eventually abandoned by the Continental Army in 1777 during the British siege. TikTokInstagram+1

Today, Fort Ticonderoga stands as a meticulously reconstructed historical site, offering visitors a tangible connection to these pivotal moments in North American history. The ongoing preservation and interpretation efforts ensure that the fort's strategic importance and the stories of those who fought there are remembered and understood. TikTokInstagram

Living History and Reenactments

One of the most engaging aspects of visiting Fort Ticonderoga is its commitment to living history. Costumed interpreters, portraying soldiers, civilians, and artisans of the 18th century, are stationed throughout the fort. They are not just performers but educators, ready to answer questions, demonstrate daily life, and share stories from the fort's past. This immersive approach allows visitors to step back in time and gain a deeper appreciation for the challenges and realities of life during the colonial and revolutionary periods. TikTokInstagram

Fort Ticonderoga frequently hosts dramatic reenactments of historical battles and events. These events, often held on weekends during the operating season, bring the fort's history to life with the thunder of cannons and the crackle of muskets. Witnessing these demonstrations provides a visceral understanding of the military tactics and the sheer power involved in 18th-century warfare. Visitors can often get quite close (safely, of course) to the action, making these reenactments a highlight for many. TikTokInstagram

Beyond the military aspects, reenactors also showcase domestic skills, trades, and the lives of civilians who would have been associated with the fort. This comprehensive approach ensures that visitors get a well-rounded picture of the historical period. It’s a dynamic way to learn, as the interpreters often engage directly with the audience, making history feel personal and accessible. TikTok

The Ticonderoga Pencil Phenomenon

While Fort Ticonderoga is a historical landmark, a curious modern phenomenon has emerged on social media: the intense loyalty to Ticonderoga pencils. Numerous TikTok videos feature teachers and students alike extolling the virtues of these pencils, citing their durability, smooth writing, and excellent erasers. Many express that Ticonderoga is the 'only' pencil they will use in the classroom, highlighting their preference for quality and longevity. TikTok+6

This widespread appreciation for Ticonderoga pencils has even led to humorous content, with creators jokingly dedicating fan pages to the brand or expressing their love for the product. Some videos even showcase the 'ideal' Ticonderoga pencil, complete with personalized touches. While seemingly unrelated to the historical fort, this cultural trend underscores the enduring legacy and quality associated with the Ticonderoga name, creating a unique intersection of historical significance and modern-day appreciation.
