Visitors find Thurmond Ghost Town to be a fascinating glimpse into West Virginia's industrial past, appreciating the preserved historic buildings and the still-operating train depot. The eerie atmosphere and the stories shared by park rangers enhance the experience, though the narrow, winding roads require careful navigation. Reddit+1

"Interesting look at how it "used to be". A few brick buildings, a few houses and train tower. The photos and timelines in the windows of the old store fronts really bring it to life. The single track roadway along side the train bridge has a few pedestrian vantage points where you can enjoy the river and take in the view. Plenty of parking and a nice easy walk to take in the town and the old station/Amtrak stop. Worth the stop."

"Super cool spot to just walk around and take in the history of the area! Hard to believe how long the buildings have been there. So great that the train station is still in operation. The bridge going in and out of main street was super cool too!"

kim romine

"The (near) ghost town is a fun place to visit. It’s a nice secluded winding road to get to a single lane bridge that shared with the railway crossing the New River. The buildings are in great condition."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Rise and Fall of Thurmond

Thurmond, West Virginia, was once a bustling hub of activity, founded in 1900 and quickly becoming a vital center for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway (C&O). Its prosperity was fueled by the abundant coal mines in the surrounding Appalachian Mountains. By the early 1900s, Thurmond was one of the busiest railroad towns in the country, boasting the highest revenue on the C&O line and even having banks that were considered the richest in the state. The town's population swelled, with hundreds of residents calling it home. Instagram+1

The Great Depression, however, marked the beginning of Thurmond's decline. As the demand for coal lessened and railroad technology evolved, the town's importance waned. By the 1950s, Thurmond was largely abandoned, its once-vibrant streets falling silent. Today, it stands as a remarkably preserved ghost town, a poignant reminder of its industrial past, with a population officially listed as just four people. Instagram+2
