"We loved this experience! Hiked down to the camp and back out-approximately 4 miles.
We were able to tour the Brown House. No pictures allowed in the Brown house. Lovely volunteers working on 09/11/25! We were able to view the Prime Ministers cabin too. It’s a museum to learn more of the Hoovers and what the camp was about. So glad we made the hike down!"

Michelle Rigby

"Highly recommend this tour. Ginny, the tour guide, was great and so knowledgeable! Told the whole story of Herbert Hoover and Camp Rapidan. Toured the whole camp and then had some time to walk around on our own. Took a total of 2 and 1/2 hours. Half an hour drive down on tour bus, half an hour drive back and an hour and a half on the site. Definitely worth the $10."

Cindy Harding

"Tour done by Shenandoah National Park service staff to President Hover's getaway camp site was great. Provided informative information all way down, going thru buildings and ride back. Saved my energy on hiking down and back for another location to see a falls."

The History of Camp Hoover

Rapidan Camp, originally known as Camp Hoover, served as President Herbert Hoover's personal mountain retreat from 1929 to 1933. Located in a remote section of Shenandoah National Park, it was designed to offer a secluded escape from the pressures of the presidency. Hoover envisioned it as a place for relaxation, fishing, and informal meetings. The camp was built with a focus on blending into the natural environment, utilizing local materials and a rustic aesthetic. It comprised several log cabins, including the main 'Brown House,' which served as the central hub for dining and meetings, and the 'Prime Minister's Cabin,' which hosted distinguished guests. Instagram+1

The camp also featured unique amenities like a trout hatchery and a network of stone fountains and pools, designed to enhance the natural beauty of the Rapidan River. During his stays, Hoover often invited friends, family, and even political figures to Camp Hoover, fostering a more relaxed atmosphere for discussions and decision-making. The camp played a role in shaping some of Hoover's policies and provided a respite during challenging times, including the early years of the Great Depression. After Hoover's presidency, the camp fell into disuse for a period before being incorporated into Shenandoah National Park and preserved for its historical significance. Reddit

Today, Rapidan Camp stands as a testament to a unique period in American history. Visitors can hike or take a bus tour to explore the preserved structures and imagine life at the presidential retreat. The site offers a tangible connection to Herbert Hoover's personal life and his approach to leadership. The ongoing preservation efforts ensure that this historic site continues to educate and inspire visitors about a less-discussed chapter of presidential history. Reddit
